Jesus Speaks About the Destruction of the Temple
Mk. 13:1-2; Lk. 21:5-6
1 And after Jesus had departed from the temple* and was going away, His disciples came to draw His attention to the edifices of the temple. 2 But in response, He said to them, “You see all these things, do you not? Truly, I say to you, not a single stone will be left here upon another stone, which will not be demolished.”
Eschatological Discourse: The Beginning of Woes
Mk. 13:3-13; Lk. 21:7-19
3 And while He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him in private, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the consummation* of the age?” 4 And in response, Jesus said to them, “Watch out, lest anyone mislead you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not frightened, for this must occur, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in diverse * locations. 8 But all these events * are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “Then they will deliver you over to persecution and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations because of My name. 10 And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will emerge and mislead many; 12 and because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Eschatological Discourse: The Abomination of Desolation
Mk. 13:14-23; Lk. 21:20-24
15 “Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place”—let the one who reads exercise discernment— 16 “then let those in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let the one on the housetop not come down to take things out of his house, 18 and let the one in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And alas for those women who are pregnant * and for those who are nursing infants during those days! 20 But pray that your escape may not take place in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not occurred from the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will occur. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be shortened. 23 “If anyone says to you at that time, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘Here He is,’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will emerge and give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25 Behold, I have told you in advance. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and is visible as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will be gathered.
Eschatological Discourse: The Coming of the Son of Man
Mk. 13:24-27; Lk. 21:25-28
29 “And immediately following the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will lament, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other end of it. *
Eschatological Discourse: The Lesson of the Fig Tree
Mk. 13:28-31; Lk. 21:29-33
32 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: As soon as its branch has become tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also you, when you see all these things, know that He is near, at the gates. 34 Truly, I say to you that this generation will never pass away until all these things occur. 35 Heaven and earth * will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
Eschatological Discourse: The Unknown Day of the Son of Man’s Coming
Mk. 13:32-37; Lk. 17:26-30, 34-36
36 “But concerning that day and hour, no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, * nor the Son, but the Father alone. 37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days prior to the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark. 39 And they were unaware until the flood came and carried them all away. So also will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 At that time, there will be two men * in the field: one will be taken, while the other will be left. * 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken, while the other will be left. 42 Therefore, keep awake, because you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master * of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been watchful and would not have allowed his house to be burglarised. 44 For this reason, you must also be made ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour which you do not think.
Eschatological Discourse: Lesson from the Faithful and Wicked Servants
Lk. 12:41-48
45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom the master has set over his household to give to them their food at the right time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing upon his return. 47 Truly, I say to you that he will set him over all that belongs to him. 48 But if that wicked servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with those who drink habitually, 50 the master of that servant will arrive on a day that he does not expect and at an hour that he is not aware of, 51 and will cut him in two and assign his share with the hypocrites. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
