Women Who Assisted Jesus and His Disciples
1 And it occurred that soon afterwards, He was travelling from one city and village to another, preaching and declaring the gospel of the kingdom of God; and the twelve were with Him, 2 and certain women who had been healed from evil spirits and diseases (Mary, who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward,* and Susanna) and many others who were providing for their needs from their own resources.
The Parable of the Sower
Matt. 13:1-9; Mk. 4:1-9
4 And as a large crowd was gathering together and they were going to Him from one city to the other, He spoke by way of a parable, 5 “The sower * went out to sow his seed, and as he was sowing, * some seed * fell along the way and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 6 And other fell on the rock, and when it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And other fell in the midst of thorns, and when the thorns grew up with it, they choked it. 8 And other fell into the good soil, and when it grew up, it produced a crop a hundredfold.” After He said these things, He began to call out, “The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of the Parables
Matt. 13:10-17; Mk. 4:10-12
9 Now His disciples began to ask Him what this parable signified. 10 And He said, “To you it has been granted to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’
The Interpretation of the Parable of the Sower
Matt. 13:18-23; Mk. 4:13-20
11 Now the parable signifies this: The seed is the word of God, 12 and those along the way are the ones who hear—then the devil comes and snatches away the word from their heart, in order that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive it with joy, but these do not have root—who believe for a time, but in a time of testing fall away. 14 And with reference to what fell among the thorns—these are the ones who hear, and as they go along are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not bring fruit to maturity. 15 And with reference to the seed in the good soil—these are the ones who, upon hearing the word, hold fast to it with a noble and good heart, and bear fruit by perseverance.
A Lamp on a Stand
Mk. 4:21-25
16 “And no one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light. 17 For nothing is concealed that will not become manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Therefore, consider how you hear. For whoever has, to him more * will be given; and whoever does not have, even that which he seems to have will be taken away from him.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
Matt. 12:46-50; Mk. 3:31-35
19 Now His mother and brothers came to Him, but they were not able to meet with Him on account of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”
21 But in response, He said to them, “These are My mother and My brothers—the ones who hear and do the word of God.”
Jesus Calms a Storm
Matt. 8:23-27; Mk. 4:35-41
22 Now it occurred that on one of those days, both He and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they sailed away. 23 And as they were sailing, He fell asleep; and a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger. 24 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Master, master, we are perishing.” So, when He woke up, He rebuked the wind and the surging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” But they were afraid and marvelled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”*
The Healing of the Gerasene Demon-possessed Man
Matt. 8:28-34; Mk. 5:1-20
26 Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,* which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He got out on the land, a certain man from the city—who had demons—met Him, and who for a considerable time had not worn clothes and was not living in a house, but among the tombs. 28 And when he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?* I beg You, do not torment me.” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man, for many times it had seized him. And he was bound with chains and shackles and was kept under guard; but breaking the bonds, he would be driven by the demon into the solitary places. 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. 31 And they were imploring Him that He would not order them to go away into the abyss.
32 Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding there on the hillside, and they implored Him that He would allow them to go into them. And He allowed them. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd plunged down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. 34 And when those tending them saw what had taken place, they fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside. 35 And they went out to see what had taken place, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were frightened. 36 And those who had seen it reported to them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37 And all the people of the circumjacent region of the Gerasenes requested Him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. So He got into the boat and returned. 38 But the man from whom the demons had gone out kept begging Him to accompany Him,** but He sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and narrate all that God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.
The Healing of a Woman with the Flow of Blood and the Raising of Jairus’ Daughter
Matt. 9:18-26; Mk. 5:21-43
40 Now as Jesus was returning, the crowd received Him, for they were all waiting for Him. 41 And behold, there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at the feet of Jesus and began to beg Him to come to his house, 42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying.
And as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.
43 Now there was a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years—who, although she had spent all her living on physicians,* was not able to be healed by anyone— 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment, and immediately her flow of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And when they were all denying it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are pressing and thronging against You.”* 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I know power has proceeded from Me.” 47 Having seen that she had not escaped notice, the woman came trembling and fell down before Him. She declared before all the people for what reason she had touched Him, and how she had immediately been healed. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, * your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
49 As He was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue ruler,* saying, “Your daughter is dead; do not disturb the Teacher any longer.” 50 But Jesus, having heard this, answered him, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be healed.” 51 And when He came to the house, He did not permit anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and the mother. 52 And they were all weeping and mourning for her, but He said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead, but is sleeping.” 53 And they were ridiculing Him, knowing that she was dead. 54 And holding her by the hand,* He called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately, and He ordered that something should be given to her to eat.* 56 And her parents were astonished, but He commanded them not to tell anyone what had taken place.
