Some Sayings of Jesus:
Causes of Sin
Matt. 18:6-7; 21-22; Mk. 9:42
1 And He said to His disciples, “It is impossible for causes of sin not to come, but woe to the one * through whom they come! 2 It is better for him if a millstone is hung around his neck and he is thrown into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. 3 “Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, reprove him, and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Augmenting Faith
5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Add to our faith!” 6 So the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.
Unmeritorious Servants
7 “And which of you, having a servant plowing or shepherding sheep, who, when he comes in from the field, will say to him, ‘Come immediately and recline at the table’? 8 Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare what I may eat, and when you have girded yourself, serve me while I eat and drink, and after these things you will eat and drink.’? 9 He does not express gratitude to the servant because he did what was ordered, does he? 10 So you also, when you have done all the things you were ordered, say, ‘We are unmeritorious servants; we have done that which we were duty-bound to do.’ ”
The Healing of the Ten Lepers
11 And it occurred that, as He was going to Jerusalem, He was passing through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as He entered a certain village, ten leprous men met Him—who usually stood at a distance. 13 And they lifted their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14 And when He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And it occurred that, as they were departing, they were cleansed. 15 But one of them, having seen that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him—and he was a Samaritan! 17 Then Jesus replied, saying, “Were not ten cleansed? But the other nine, where are they? 18 Was no one found to come back and give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Rise and go. Your faith has healed you.” *
The Coming of God’s Kingdom
Matt. 24:23-28; 37-41
20 Now, being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He replied to them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with careful observation, 21 nor will they say, ‘Behold, here!’ or ‘Behold, there!’ For the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
22 Then He said to His * disciples, “Days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Behold, there!’ Or, ‘Behold, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. 24 For just as the lightning, when it flashes, shines from one end of the sky to the other end of the sky, so the Son of Man will be * in His day. 25 But first it is necessary for Him to suffer many things, and to be rejected by this generation. 26 And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day in which Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all. 28 Similarly, just as it happened in the days of Lot: They were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building. 29 But on the day in which Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed all. 30 It will be akin to these on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, whoever is on the housetop and his possessions are in the house must not go down to take them away. And similarly, the one who is in the field must not turn back. 32 Remember the wife of Lot. 33 Whoever seeks to safeguard his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will preserve it alive. 34 I say to you that on that night, there will be two in one bed: one will be taken, and the other will be left. 35 There will be two women * grinding at the same place: one will be taken and the other will be left.” ** 37 And in reply, they said to Him, “Where, Lord?” So He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered.”
Notes
1 The phrase to the one is supplied to the text on a contextual basis for the purpose of clarification
19 One ancient Greek manuscript omits the independent clause Your faith has healed you
22 Greek the . Here, the Greek definite article functions pronominally, corresponding contextually to the English possessive His
24 Three ancient Greek manuscripts end the verse here
35 The Greek text reads two , but the word women is rightly supplied based on context
35 One ancient Greek manuscript omits the entire verse 35
35 Some ancient manuscripts include a v. 36, which reads: Two [men] will be in the field. The one will be taken and the other will be left, harmonising the text with a parallel in Matt. 24:40
