Luke 13

Repent or Perish
1 Now at that very time some were present who had come to tell Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And in reply, He* said to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans, because they suffered these things? 3 No, I say to you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen * on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were debtors beyond all the men * who live in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all perish as well.”
The Parable of the Fig Tree
6 And He began to say this parable: “A certain man * had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, but found none. 7 So he said to the vineyard worker, ‘Behold, throughout these three years, I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, but found none. Cut it down. Why does it even deplete the soil?’ 8 But in reply, he said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 And if it bears fruit in the subsequent year, that would be beneficial, * but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
A Woman with a Spirit of Disability
10 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman there who had a spirit of disability for eighteen years; and she was bent over and not able to raise herself up fully. 12 And seeing her, Jesus called out and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your disability.” 13 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to glorify God. 14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, answered and said to the crowd, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Therefore, come on these days and be healed, and not on the day of the Sabbath.” 15 But the Lord* answered and said to him, “Hypocrites! Does not each of you release his ox or his donkey from the feeding-trough on the Sabbath and lead it away to give it water? 16 And this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen * years, is it not necessary for her to be liberated from this bondage on the day of the Sabbath?” 17 And as He spoke these things,* all those who were adversarial to Him were put to shame; and the whole crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things that were being performed by Him.
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven
Matt. 13:31-33; Mk. 4:30-32
18 Therefore, He said, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I liken it? 19 It is like a grain of mustard * that a man took and threw into his own garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky found shelter in its branches.”
20 And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until the whole was leavened.”
The Narrow Door
Matt. 7:13-14, 21-23
22 Now He was going throughout cities and villages, teaching as He made His way towards Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there a few who are saved?” And He said to them, 24 “Exert yourselves to the utmost to enter through the narrow door, * because many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, * open to us.’ And in reply, He will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 And He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness!’ 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves cast outside. 29 And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
Jesus Laments Over Jerusalem
Matt. 23:37-39
31 At that very hour, some Pharisees came up, saying to Him, “Go out and depart from here, because Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and the third day I am perfected.’ * 33 Nevertheless, I must proceed on My way today and tomorrow and on the following day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.
34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How many times have I desired to gather your children together in the way a hen gathers * her young under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 Behold, your house is left to you in a condition of desolation. * And I say to you, you will never see Me until the time * comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
