Luke 11

The Lord’s Prayer
Matt. 6:9-15; 7:7-11
1 And it occurred that, as He was praying in a certain place, and when He stopped, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.” 2 And He said to them, “When you pray, say,
“Father, * let Your name be revered as holy.
Let Your kingdom come. *
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation.” *
5 And He said to them, “Who among you will have a friend, and will go to him at midnight, and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 because a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I do not have anything to set before him.’ 7 And that one answering from inside will say, ‘Do not cause me trouble. The door has already been locked and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ 8 I say to you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his shameless persistence, when he gets up, he will give him as much as he needs. 9 So, I say to you, ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, it will be opened. 11 But which father among you, if his son requests a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? * 12 Or also, if he requests an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Jesus and Some Among the Crowds
Matt. 12:12-30; Mk. 3:20-27
14 Now He was casting out a demon that was mute. And it turned out that when the demon came out, the mute man* spoke, and the crowds marvelled. 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the ruler of demons, He casts out demons.” 16 And others, while testing Him, kept demanding from Him a sign from heaven. 17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house divided against a house falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you are saying by Beelzebul I cast out demons. 19 But if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? On account of this, they will be your judges. 20 But if by the finger of God, I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own mansion, his possessions are secured. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks him and subdues him, he takes away his complete armour in which he had trusted and distributes his booty. 23 “The one who does not align with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters.
The Return of the Unclean Spirit
Matt. 12:43-45
24 “When the unclean spirit departs from a man, * it passes through waterless places searching for rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came out.’ 25 And having arrived, it finds the house * swept and put in proper order. 26 Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and after entering, they live there. So the last state of that man * becomes worse than the first.”
True Blessedness
27 Now it occurred that, as He was saying these things, a certain woman from the crowd lifted up her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore* You, and the breasts which nursed You!” 28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
Seeking After a Sign
Matt. 12:38-42; Mk. 8:12
29 And when the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It is seeking after a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. * 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so too the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
The Light of the Body
Matt. 5:15; 6:22-23
33 “No one, having lightened a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who enter can see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light. But when it is diseased, your body also is dark. 35 Therefore, watch out lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, not having any part dark, it will be completely bright, as when the lamp brightens you with its rays.”
Pronouncement of Woes on the Pharisees and Legal Experts
Matt. 23:1-36; Mk. 12:38-40; Lk. 20:45-47
37 And when He had spoken, a Pharisee asked Him to have a meal with Him, and He went in and reclined at the table. 38 And the Pharisee, having seen it, marvelled that He did not first wash before the meal. 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but the inside of you is full of avarice and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 Rather, give as charity the things that are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.
42 “But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done without omitting those things also. 43 Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the most honourable seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you, * because you are like inconspicuous graves, and the men * who walk over them do not realise it.”
45 Now, in reply, one of the authorities in the Mosaic Law said to Him, “Teacher, in saying these things, you are abusing us also.” 46 And He said, “Woe to you also, authorities in the Mosaic Law, because you load men with oppressive burdens, yet you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you, because you build the monuments of the prophets, but your fathers killed them. 48 Consequently, you are witnesses, and you consent to the works of your fathers, because they killed them and you build their monuments. * 49 Indeed, because of this, the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, * 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the house of worship. * Yes, I say to you, it will be charged against this generation. 52 Woe to you, authorities in the Mosaic Law, you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you prevented those who were entering. ”
53 And when He departed from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be extremely adversarial and to question Him about many things, 54 plotting to entrap Him in something He might say.
