The Appointment of the Seventy-two Others
1 Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy* others and sent them two by two ahead of Him into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest that He may send out workers into His harvest. 3 Go; behold, I am sending you like lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Do not carry a moneybag or a knapsack or sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5 And in whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this household.’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And stay in the same house, eating and drinking * what they provide, for the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not move from house to house. 8 And in whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is placed before you, 9 and heal the sick in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But in whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your city that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. But know this: that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I say to you that it will be more endurable on that day for Sodom than for that city.
Pronouncement of Woes on the Unrepentant Cities
Matt. 11:20-24
13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works that took place among you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more endurable for Tyre and for Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No; you will be brought down to Hades.
16 The one who hears you hears Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and the one who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
The Return of the Seventy-two
17 And the seventy* returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you the authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will ever harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice in this: that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names have been inscribed in heaven.”
Jesus Rejoices in the Holy Spirit
Matt. 11:25-27; 13:16-17
21 At that same hour, He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give praise * to You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have kept these things secret from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for such was well-pleasing before You. 22 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal Him.”
23 And turning to the disciples, He said in private, “Blessed are the eyes which see what you see. 24 For I say to you that many prophets and kings * desired to see what you see, but did not see it; and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 And behold, a certain authority in the Mosaic Law stood up to put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you understand it?” 27 And in reply, he said, “You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.” 28 And He said to him, “You have responded correctly. Do this, and you will live.”
29 But he, intending to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” 30 And Jesus continued, saying, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him. Having inflicted blows on him, they went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now, by chance, a certain priest was going down that way. And seeing him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 And similarly also, a Levite, when he came down to the place and saw him, passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, who was journeying, came to him, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 And he approached him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he placed him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And on the following day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him, and whatever more you expend, I will repay you when I return. 36 Which of these three do you think became a neighbour of the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 So he said, “The one who showed compassion to him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”
Martha and Mary
38 Now as they travelled along, He entered a certain village. And a certain woman, Martha by name, received Him.* 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who, having sat at the feet of Jesus, was hearing His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much service; and she came up and said, “Lord, is it not a matter of concern to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Speak then to her that she should help me.” 41 And in reply, the Lord said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and disturbed about many things. 42 But one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Notes
1 Some ancient manuscripts read seventy-two. So also v. 17
7 One ancient Greek manuscript omits and drinking as part of the coordinate verb phrase eating and drinking
21 Or I give thanks
24 One ancient Greek manuscript omits and kings as part of the coordinate noun phrase prophets and kings , probably because the parallel text in Matt. 13:17 lacks it
38 Some ancient manuscripts read received Him into the house
