John 13

13
Jesus Washes the Feet of His Disciples
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father, and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And during dinner, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,* to betray Him, 3 Jesus,* having known that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 got up from the dinner and laid aside His* outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around Himself. 5 Then He poured water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them dry with the towel which He had tied around Himself. 6 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not presently understand, but you will understand after these things.” 8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet forever.”** Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not only my feet, but my* hands and my* head as well.” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed has no need to wash, except for his * feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not everyone of you.” * 11 For He knew the one who was going to betray Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you* are clean.”* 12 So when He had washed their feet and taken His outer garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “ Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you speak rightly, for thus * I am. 14 If I then, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, so that you also should do just as I have done for you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you understand these things, blessed are you if you do them.
18 “I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to fulfil the Scripture: ‘The one who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ * 19 From this moment forward, I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am He. * 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who accepts anyone I send accepts Me; and the one who accepts Me accepts the One who sent Me.”
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
Matt. 26:20-25; Mk. 14:17-21; Lk. 22:21-23
21 Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 The disciples began to look at one another, uncertain as to whom He was speaking. 23 One of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at the table at Jesus' side. 24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to ask who it was about whom He was speaking. 25 Then, leaning back against Jesus’ chest, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I will dip the piece of bread and give it.” * Then, having dipped the piece of bread, He gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.* 27 And after the piece of bread,* Satan then entered into him. So Jesus said to him, “What you are doing, do quickly.” 28 Now none of those who reclined at the table understood the reason for which He said this to him. 29 For some were speculating, since Judas had the money bag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy the things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.
The New Commandment
31 Then, having gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, * God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him with immediacy. 33 Little children, yet a little longer I am with you. You will seek Me, and just as I have spoken to the Jews, now I also say to you, “Where I am going, you cannot come,” 34 “A new commandment I am giving to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all people will come to know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
Matt. 26:31-35; Mk. 14:27-31; Lk. 22:31-34
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus responded to Him, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me at this time, but you will follow at a later time.” 37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You at this time? I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus responded, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times!”
