Hebrews 10

10
Christ’s Once-for-all Sacrifice
1 For the Law, having a shadow of the good things to come, not the form of things itself,* is never able, each year, with the same sacrifices which they continually offer, to perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since those who worship, having been cleansed once, would no longer have consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices* there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to remove sins.
5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said,
“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
but a body You prepared for Me;
6 In whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin,
You were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
in the scroll of the book it is written of Me—
to do Your will, O God.’ ”*
8 After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings, and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin, You did not desire nor take pleasure in them,”* (which are offered according to the Law). 9 Then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.”** He takes away the first in order to establish the second. 10 By that will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 And every priest stands daily, ministering and repeatedly offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this One, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from then on waiting until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering, He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after He had said,
16 “This is the covenant which I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their hearts,
and upon their minds I will inscribe them,”
17 And,
“Their sins and their lawless acts
I will never remember again.”*
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Drawing Near to God’s Presence
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places* through the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated* for us through the veil,* that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have* a great priest over God’s house, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for faithful is the One who promised. 24 And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and to good works, 25 not forsaking our assembling together,* as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and so much more as you see the Day drawing near.
Warning Against Deliberate Sinning
26 For if we deliberately continue to sin after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment and a blaze of fire that will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the basis of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot* the Son of God, and who has considered as profane the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified,* and who has insulted* the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know the One who said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.”* And again,* “The Lord will judge His people.”* 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
The Reward of Faith and Endurance
32 But recall the earlier days, in which, after you had been enlightened, you endured a great conflict with sufferings, 33 sometimes by being publicly exposed both to reproaches and persecutions, and sometimes by becoming partners with those who were treated in this way. 34 For you both sympathised with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of what you possessed, knowing that you yourselves have a better and abiding possession.*
35 So then, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after doing the will of God, you may receive the promise. 37 For,
“Yet in a very little while,
the One who is coming will come,
and will not delay.
38 But My righteous one shall live by faith;
and if he shrinks back,
My soul takes no pleasure in him.”*
39 But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith for the preservation of the soul.
