2 Peter 1
1
Greeting
1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have received a faith equally precious as ours by the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has granted to us all things pertaining to life and godliness, through the knowledge of the One who called us to His own glory and excellence, 4 through which He has granted to us His* precious and very great promises, so that through these you may become sharers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of inordinate desire.
Spiritual Qualities in Increasing Measure
5 Now for this same reason also, applying all earnestness, supply with your faith virtue, and with virtue, knowledge, 6 and with knowledge, self-control, and with self-control, perseverance, and with perseverance, godliness, 7 and with godliness, brotherly love, and with brotherly love, love. 8 For if these qualities* belong to you and are increasing, they do not make you* ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For the one in whom these qualities are not present is blind or nearsighted, having forgotten the cleansing of his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more earnest to make your calling and election sure,* for if you do these things, you will never* fall. 11 For in this way, the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you.
Peter’s Imminent Death
12 Therefore, I intend always to remind you concerning these things, although you know them and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 But I consider it right, as long as I am in this tent,* to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the putting off of my tent is imminent, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will also make every effort, that at any time after my departure, you are able to remember these things.*
Christ’s Honour and Glory, and the Prophetic Word
16 For we did not make known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ by following artfully fabricated myths, but as those who were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honour and glory from God the Father, such a voice as this was brought to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My Son, My Beloved, with whom I am well pleased”*— 18 and we ourselves heard this voice brought from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you do well if you pay attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that every prophecy of Scripture does not originate from one’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever* delivered by the will of man, but men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
