2 Corinthians 1
1
Greetings
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our* brother,
To the church of God which is in Corinth, with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia:
2 Grace to you, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Ascription of Blessedness to God
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 the One who comforts us in all our distress, so that we may be able to comfort those in any distress, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow towards us, so through Christ our comfort also overflows. 6 But if we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is at work in the endurance of the same sufferings which we also suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you are partners in our* sufferings, so also you are in our* comfort.
Divine Rescue
8 For we* do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, regarding our distress which happened in Asia, that we were excessively weighed down, beyond our ability, so that we despaired even of life. 9 Indeed, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we would not have confidence in ourselves, but in God, the One who raises the dead, 10 who rescued us from so great a peril of death, and will rescue us, in whom we have placed our hope that He will yet again rescue us, 11 as you also join in helping us* through prayer, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favour given* to us through the prayers of* many.
Integrity of Paul and Others
12 For our boasting is this: The testimony of our conscience, that in sincerity and purity from God,* not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have behaved ourselves in the world, and all the more so towards you. 13 For we are not writing any other things to you other than what you read or understand,* and I hope that you will understand until the end, 14 just as you have also understood us partially, that we are your reason for boasting, just as you also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.
Paul’s Change of Plans
15 And in this confidence, I was planning previously to come to you, so that you might have a second experience of blessing, 16 and through you to go to Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and by you to be assisted on my way to Judea. 17 Therefore, I did not use fickleness when I intended to do this, did I? Or what I intend, do I intend according to the flesh, so that with me there would be “Yes, yes”, and “No, no” simultaneously*? 18 But God is faithful, so that our word to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ,* the One who was preached among you by us—by me and Silvanus and Timothy—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in Him it has always been “Yes.” 20 For all the promises of God, in Him they are “Yes”; therefore, through Him also is the “Amen,” to the glory of God through us.
21 Now the One who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22 the One who has also sealed us and given the first instalment* of the Spirit in our hearts.
23 But I call upon God as a witness against my soul, that in sparing you, I did not come again to Corinth. 24 Not that we assert authority over your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy, for by your faith you have stood firm.
