1 Timothy 1

1
Apostolic Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 To Timothy, genuine child in the faith:
Grace, mercy, peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Furthering God’s Plan
3 Just as I urged you to remain in Ephesus while I was going to Macedonia, so that you might charge certain individuals not to teach other doctrines, 4 and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which produce speculations rather than furthering* God’s plan, which is grounded in faith. 5 But the goal of our charge is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Some people have deviated from these and have turned away into empty discourse, 7 wanting to be teachers of the Law, although they do not understand either the things which they are saying or the things about which they are emphatically asserting. 8 But we know that the Law is good, if anyone uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this, that law is not appointed for a righteous person but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and worldly, for those who kill their fathers and those who kill their mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, homosexuals, enslavers,* liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching,* 11 which accords with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
Paul is Grateful to God for His Grace
12 I am grateful* to the One who strengthens me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because He considered me faithful, appointing me to ministry, 13 although I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. But I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord increased abundantly for me,* along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15 The saying is trustworthy and worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost. 16 But for this reason, I was shown mercy, so that in me, as foremost, Christ Jesus* might demonstrate His* complete patience, as a pattern for those who are going to believe in Him for eternal life.
Doxology
17 Now to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever.* Amen.
Instruction Given to Timothy
18 I am setting before you this charge,* Timothy my* child, in conformity with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight, 19 holding faith and a good conscience, which certain individuals have pushed away, and as a result* have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may be disciplined not to blaspheme.
