1 Peter 1
1
Greeting
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the elect, who reside as foreigners in the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ:
May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Ascription of Blessing to God
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One who, according to His great mercy, has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven* for you, 5 who are being guarded by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this* you greatly rejoice, though now for a short time, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the proven authenticity of your faith—more valuable than gold, which perishes even though tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom, though you have not seen Him, you love; in whom, though you do not now see Him, you believe and rejoice greatly with joy inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the ultimate goal of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace meant for you sought and examined carefully, 11 inquiring what person or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when He testified in advance concerning the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.* 12 To them* it was revealed that they were serving not themselves, but you, with reference to the very things which have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
Called to Be Holy
13 Therefore, girding up the loins of your minds* and being sober-minded, fix your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children,* do not be conformed to the desires you formerly had in your ignorance, 15 but as the One who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written: “You shall be holy, because I am holy.”*
17 And if you call on Him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves with fear during the time of your temporary residence on earth,* 18 knowing that you were redeemed from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has been manifested in these last times for the sake of you— 21 those who, through Him, believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
The Abiding Word
22 Having purified your souls in obedience to the truth* for a sincere brotherly love, love one another intently from the heart, 23 because you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For “all flesh is like grass,
and all its splendour like the flower of the grass.
The grass withers
and the flower falls away,
25 but the word of the Lord abides forever.”*
Now this is the word* which was preached to you.
