Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One who, according to His great mercy, has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven* for you

In this* you greatly rejoice, though now for a short time, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the proven authenticity of your faith—more valuable than gold, which perishes even though tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ

but as the One who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written: “You shall be holy, because I am holy.”*

As obedient children,* do not be conformed to the desires you formerly had in your ignorance

Therefore, girding up the loins of your minds* and being sober-minded, fix your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

For “all flesh is like grass, and all its splendour like the flower of the grass. The grass withers and the flower falls away, but the word of the Lord abides forever.”* Now this is the word* which was preached to you.
