The Healing of the Gerasene Demon-Possessed Man
Matt. 8:28-34; Lk. 8:26-39
They came to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, to the region of the Gerasenes in Gentile territory.
When Jesus had stepped out of the boat onto the shore, immediately a man with an unclean spirit came out from the tombs to meet Him.
This man had his dwelling among the burial tombs. No one could restrain or bind him anymore, not even with chains.
He had frequently been bound with shackles on his feet and chains on his hands, but he had torn the chains apart with supernatural strength, and he had shattered the shackles into pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
Constantly, night and day, he would be among the tombs and on the mountains, crying out in torment and cutting himself with sharp stones in his misery.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran towards Him and fell on his knees before Him in compelled worship.
Crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I put You under oath by God, do not torture me before the appointed time!"
Jesus had been commanding him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" The demon answered, "My name is Legion, because we are many"—indicating thousands of demons possessed this man.
The demons begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.
Now a large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby mountainside.
The demons begged Jesus, saying, "Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter into them."
Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs. The herd of about two thousand pigs rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.
Those who had been tending the pigs fled and reported what had happened in the city and throughout the countryside. People came out to see for themselves what had taken place.
They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed sitting there, clothed and in his right mind—the very man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. They were afraid at the dramatic change.
Those who had witnessed the event described in detail to the others what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and also told them about what happened to the pigs.
The people began begging Jesus to depart from their region—valuing their pigs more than the deliverance of the man.
As Jesus was getting into the boat to leave, the man who had been demon-possessed begged Jesus that he might remain with Him and become His follower.
But Jesus did not permit him to come. Instead, He said to him, "Go to your home and to your own people, and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and tell them how He has had mercy on you."
The man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis—the region of ten Greek cities—all that Jesus had done for him. Everyone who heard continually marvelled at his testimony.
Jairus' Daughter and the Woman with the Discharge of Blood
Matt. 9:18-26; Lk. 8:40-56
When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around Him as He stood by the sea.
One of the rulers of the synagogue came to Him, a man named Jairus. When he saw Jesus, he fell down at His feet in desperation.
He begged Jesus earnestly many times, saying, "My little daughter is on the very verge of dying. Please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live."
Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed Jesus and pressed against Him on all sides, thronging Him.
A woman was in the crowd who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve long years.
She had endured much suffering under the care of many physicians. She had spent all her financial resources on treatments, but had not been helped in any way. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.
When she heard the reports about Jesus and His healing power, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His outer garment.
She kept saying to herself, "If I can just touch even His clothes, I will be healed."
Immediately the flow of blood stopped and dried up. She felt in her body that she had been healed from her affliction.
Immediately Jesus, knowing in Himself that power had gone out from Him, turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched My clothes?"
His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing against You from every side, and You ask 'Who touched Me?'"
But Jesus kept looking around to see the woman who had done this.
The woman, fearful because she knew what had happened to her, came forward and fell down before Him. She told Him the whole truth about her condition and her healing.
Jesus said to her gently, "Daughter, your faith has healed you and made you whole. Go in peace and be permanently well from your disease."
While Jesus was still speaking to the woman, messengers came from the house of Jairus the synagogue ruler, saying, "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the Teacher any further? It is too late."
But Jesus, overhearing what was being said and disregarding their message of despair, said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid. Only believe and trust Me."
Jesus did not permit anyone to follow along with Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
They arrived at the house of the ruler of the synagogue. Jesus saw a commotion, with people weeping and wailing loudly in mourning.
When He entered the house, He said to them, "Why are you making such a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is sleeping."
They began to ridicule and laugh at Him scornfully. But after putting all the mourners outside, Jesus took along only the child's father and mother and His three disciples, and went into the room where the child was lying.
Taking the child by the hand, He said to her in Aramaic, "Talitha koum!"—which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise and get up!"
Immediately the girl arose and began to walk around the room, fully restored to life and health. She was twelve years of age. Immediately all who witnessed this were completely and utterly amazed beyond measure.
Jesus strictly and sternly ordered them that no one should be told about this miracle. Then He said that something should be given to the girl to eat, demonstrating that she was truly alive and not a ghost.
