The Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
Matt. 26:1-5; Lk. 22:1-2; Jn. 11:45-53
1 Two days remained until Passover and the Unleavened Bread festival. Chief priests and scribes were scheming about how to arrest Jesus secretly and execute Him.
2 They agreed, "We must not act during the festival, or the people might riot."
Jesus Anointed in Bethany
Matt. 26:6-13; Jn. 12:1-8
3 While Jesus dined at Simon the leper's house in Bethany, a woman arrived carrying an alabaster jar filled with expensive pure nard perfume. She broke the jar's seal and poured the perfume over Jesus' head.
4 Some guests reacted indignantly, muttering, "What waste!
5 This perfume could have sold for over three hundred denarii—nearly a year's wages—and the proceeds distributed to the poor." They rebuked her harshly.
6 Jesus intervened: "Leave her alone. Why are you troubling her? She has performed a beautiful deed for Me.
7 The poor remain with you constantly, and you can help them whenever you choose. But I will not remain with you much longer.
8 She has done what she could—she has anointed My body in preparation for burial.
9 I tell you truthfully: Wherever the gospel is proclaimed worldwide, people will remember and recount her deed."
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
Matt. 26:14-16; Lk. 22:3-6
10 Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the chief priests offering to betray Jesus to them.
11 They were delighted and promised him payment. Judas began seeking an opportune moment for betrayal.
Jesus Eats the Passover with His Disciples
Matt. 26:17-25; Lk. 22:7-14, 21-23; Jn. 13:21-30
12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when Passover lambs were sacrificed, the disciples asked Jesus, "Where should we prepare the Passover meal for You?"
13 Jesus sent two disciples with instructions: "Enter the city. You will encounter a man carrying a water jar. Follow him.
14 Tell the house owner: 'The Teacher asks: Where is My guest room for eating Passover with My disciples?'
15 He will show you a large upstairs room already prepared. Make our preparations there."
16 The disciples departed, found everything exactly as Jesus described, and prepared the Passover meal.
17 That evening, Jesus arrived with the twelve disciples.
18 While they reclined eating, Jesus announced, "I tell you truthfully: One of you dining with Me will betray Me."
19 They grew distressed, asking Him individually, "Surely not I?"
20 Jesus answered, "It is one of the twelve—someone sharing this meal with Me.
21 The Son of Man proceeds along His appointed course as Scripture foretells, but woe to the man who betrays the Son of Man! That man would have been better off never being born.”
The Lord's Supper Instituted
Matt. 6:26-30; Lk. 22:15-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25
22 During the meal, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it into pieces, distributed it to them, saying, "Take this—it represents My body."
23 Then He took a cup, gave thanks, offered it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 He explained, "This represents My covenant blood, which is being poured out for many people.
25 I tell you truthfully: I will not drink wine again until that day when I drink it new in God's kingdom."
26 After singing a hymn, they departed for the Mount of Olives.
Peter's Denial Foretold
Matt. 26:31-35; Lk. 22:31-34; Jn. 13 36-38
27 Jesus told them, "You will all abandon Me, for Scripture says: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will scatter.'
28 However, after My resurrection, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."
29 Peter protested, "Even if everyone else abandons You, I will not!"
30 Jesus replied, "I tell you truthfully: Today—this very night—before the rooster crows twice, you will deny knowing Me three times."
31 Peter insisted more emphatically, "Even if I must die with You, I will never deny You!" All the others made similar declarations.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
Matt. 26:36-46; Lk. 22:39-46
32 They arrived at an olive grove called Gethsemane. Jesus instructed His disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
33 He took Peter, James, and John with Him. He began experiencing profound anguish and distress.
34 He told them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch."
35 Going a short distance away, He fell to the ground, praying that if possible, this hour might pass from Him.
36 He prayed, "Abba, Father, everything is possible for You. Take this cup of suffering away from Me. Yet not what I want, but what You want."
37 Returning, He found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not stay awake one hour?
38 Stay alert and pray so you will not succumb to temptation. Your spirit is willing, but your flesh is weak."
39 He went away again and prayed, repeating the same words.
40 When He returned, He found them sleeping again—their eyes were heavy with exhaustion. They did not know how to respond to Him.
41 He came a third time and said, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into sinners' hands.
42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer approaches!"
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
Matt. 26:47-56; Lk. 22:47-53; Jn. 18:3-12
43 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, appeared with a mob carrying swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, scribes, and elders.
44 The betrayer had arranged a signal: "The man I kiss is Jesus. Arrest Him and guard Him securely."
45 Judas immediately approached Jesus, said "Rabbi," and kissed Him.
46 The mob seized Jesus and arrested Him.
47 One of those standing nearby drew a sword, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear.
48 Jesus responded, "Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest Me as if I were a dangerous criminal?
49 Daily I was teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me there. But Scripture must be fulfilled."
50 Then all the disciples abandoned Jesus and fled.
A Young Man Who Fled
51 A certain young man followed Jesus, wearing only a linen cloth around his body. When the mob seized him,
52 he abandoned the cloth and escaped naked.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin
Matt. 26:57-68; Lk. 22:54-55, 63-71; Jn.18:13-14, 19-24
53 They took Jesus to the high priest's residence, where all the chief priests, elders, and scribes assembled.
54 Peter followed at a distance into the high priest's courtyard. He sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55 The chief priests and entire Sanhedrin sought testimony against Jesus sufficient for execution, but found none.
56 Many witnesses gave false testimony against Him, but their accounts contradicted each other.
57 Some stood and testified falsely:
58 "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this human-made temple and in three days build another not made by human hands.'"
59 Even then their testimony did not agree.
60 The high priest stood in the center and questioned Jesus: "Have You no response to these accusations?"
61 Jesus remained silent and offered no reply. Again the high priest questioned Him: "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
62 Jesus declared, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated at the Mighty One's right hand and coming with heaven's clouds."
63 The high priest tore his robes, exclaiming, "Why do we need additional witnesses?
64 You have heard His blasphemy! What is your verdict?" They all condemned Him as deserving death.
65 Some began spitting on Him, blindfolding Him, and striking Him, taunting, "Prophesy!" The guards beat Him with their fists.
Peter Denies Jesus
Matt. 26:69-75; Lk. 22:56-62; Jn. 18:15-18, 25-27
66 While Peter remained below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant girls approached.
67 Seeing Peter warming himself, she looked directly at him and said, "You were also with Jesus the Nazarene."
68 But Peter denied it: "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about!" He went out to the entrance area, and a rooster crowed.
69 The servant girl saw him again and began telling the bystanders, "This man is one of them!"
70 Peter denied it again. Shortly afterwards, the bystanders said to Peter, "You certainly are one of them—you are a Galilean."
71 Peter began cursing and swearing, "I do not know this man you are talking about!"
72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered Jesus' words: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." He broke down and wept.
