The Destruction of the Temple Predicted
Matt. 24:1-2; Lk. 21:5-6
1 As Jesus departed the temple courts, one disciple exclaimed to Him, "Teacher, observe these magnificent stones and impressive structures!"
2 Jesus responded, "You see these grand buildings? Every single stone will be toppled—not one will remain stacked upon another."
Eschatological Discourse: The Beginning of Woes
Matt. 24:3-14; Lk. 21:7-19
3 Later, as Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives overlooking the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew questioned Him privately,
4 "Tell us when these events will occur, and what sign will indicate their imminent fulfilment?"
5 Jesus began answering: "Guard yourselves against deception.
6 Numerous imposters will arrive claiming My identity, declaring themselves the Messiah, and will deceive many people.
7 When you hear about wars and war rumors, do not panic. Such events must transpire, but they do not signal the immediate end.
8 Nations will wage war against one another, kingdoms will attack kingdoms. Earthquakes will strike various regions. Famines will occur. These represent merely the initial birth pangs.
9 "Be vigilant concerning your own safety. Authorities will arrest you and hand you over to councils. You will suffer beatings in synagogues and stand trial before governors and monarchs because of your association with Me, providing testimony before them.
10 The gospel must first be proclaimed throughout all nations before the end arrives.
11 When they arrest and prosecute you, do not worry beforehand about your defence. Simply speak whatever the Holy Spirit provides at that moment—you will not be speaking independently but through the Spirit.
12 Brothers will betray brothers to execution, fathers will betray their children, and children will rebel against parents, causing their deaths.
13 Everyone will hate you because of your allegiance to Me. Yet whoever endures faithfully until the end will experience salvation.
Eschatological Discourse: The Great Tribulation
Matt. 24:15-28; Lk. 21:20-24
14 "When you observe the abomination of desolation positioned where it should never be"—let the reader exercise discernment—"then Judean residents must flee immediately to the mountains.
15 Anyone on a rooftop must not descend or enter the house to retrieve possessions.
16 Anyone working in the fields must not return home to fetch a cloak.
17 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and nursing mothers during those days!
18 Pray that this does not occur during winter.
19 Those days will bring tribulation unprecedented since God's creation began, and unmatched thereafter.
20 Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no one would survive. But for His chosen people's sake, He has reduced the duration.
21 "If anyone tells you during that time, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or 'Look, there He is!'—do not believe it.
22 False messiahs and false prophets will emerge, performing signs and wonders attempting to deceive even God's chosen people, if possible.
23 Remain alert! I have forewarned you about everything.
Eschatological Discourse: The Coming of the Son of Man
Matt. 24:29-31; Lk. 21:25-28
24 "Following that tribulation period, the sun will lose its brightness, the moon will cease reflecting light,
25 stars will plummet from the sky, and celestial powers will be destabilised.
26 Then people will witness the Son of Man arriving in clouds with tremendous power and glory.
27 He will despatch His angels to gather His chosen people from every direction—from earth's farthest boundaries to heaven's extremities.
Eschatological Discourse: The Lesson of the Fig Trees
Matt. 24:32-35; Lk. 21:29-33
28 "Learn this lesson from the fig tree: when its branches become supple and sprout leaves, you recognise summer's approach.
29 Similarly, when you observe these events unfolding, recognise that He stands at the threshold.
30 I tell you truthfully: This generation will not pass away before all these things transpire.
31 Heaven and earth will eventually cease existing, but My words will never cease being valid.
Eschatological Discourse: The Unknown Day and Hour
Matt. 24:36-44
32 "Concerning that specific day or hour, no one possesses knowledge—not heaven's angels, not even the Son—only the Father knows.
33 Stay alert! Remain vigilant! You do not know when the appointed moment arrives.
34 It resembles a man departing on a journey who leaves his household, delegates authority to his servants, assigns each one specific responsibilities, and commands the doorkeeper to stay watchful.
35 Therefore remain watchful, since you do not know when the household master returns—whether at evening, midnight, rooster-crow, or dawn,
36 lest he arrive unexpectedly and discover you sleeping.
37 What I tell you, I tell everyone: Stay watchful."
