The Cleansing of a Leper
Mk. 1:40–45; Lk. 5:12–16
1 When He descended from the mountain where He had been teaching, large crowds of people followed Him, eager to hear more and witness His works.
2 Suddenly, a man severely afflicted with leprosy approached Him and knelt before Him in an act of worship and desperate supplication, saying, "Lord, if You are willing to heal me, I know You have the power to make me clean."
3 Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him—an act no one else would dare to do because of the ceremonial defilement—saying with compassion, "I am willing; be cleansed and made whole." Immediately, at that very moment, his leprosy was completely healed and he was restored.
4 Jesus gave him strict instructions, saying, "Make sure you do not tell anyone about this miracle; but go directly and show yourself to the priest for official examination, and offer the sacrifice that Moses commanded in the Law, as a public testimony to the religious authorities of your genuine healing."
The Healing of a Centurion's Servant
Lk. 7:1–10; Jn. 4:43–54
5 When Jesus entered the town of Capernaum, a Roman centurion—a Gentile military officer—came to Him, urgently pleading with Him for help
6 and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home completely paralysed, suffering in terrible and agonising torment."
7 Jesus responded to him, saying, "I will come to your home and heal him."
8 But the centurion humbly responded, "Lord, I am not worthy or deserving to have You come under my roof and into my house. Just speak the word of command from here, and my servant will be healed.
9 For I myself am a man who operates under the authority of my superiors, and I have soldiers under my own command, and when I tell this one, 'Go,' he goes without question, and when I tell another, 'Come,' he comes immediately, and when I tell my servant, 'Do this,' he does it. I understand that You have even greater authority over sickness and disease."
10 When Jesus heard this remarkable statement of faith, He was amazed and astonished, and He said to those who were following Him, "I tell you the solemn truth, I have not found anyone in all of Israel with such great and genuine faith as this Gentile soldier.
11 I tell you prophetically that many people will come from the east and from the west—Gentiles from all nations—and will recline at the banquet table with the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
12 but the sons of the kingdom—those who by natural birth should have inherited the kingdom, the Jewish people—will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping in sorrow and gnashing of teeth in anguish."
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; it will be done for you exactly as you have believed and trusted." And his servant was completely healed at that precise moment, though Jesus was not physically present.
Jesus Heals Many
Mk. 1:29–34; Lk. 4:38–41
14 When Jesus arrived at Peter's house in Capernaum, He found Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed, sick and suffering with a high fever.
15 He touched her hand with healing power, and immediately the fever left her body. She got up, fully restored, and began attending to His needs.
16 When evening came and the Sabbath restrictions had ended, people brought to Him many individuals who were possessed by demons, and He cast out the evil spirits with a simple word of command. He also healed everyone who was sick with various diseases.
17 This widespread healing ministry happened in order to fulfil and bring to completion what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah, who wrote: "He Himself took upon Himself our infirmities and sicknesses and carried away our diseases."*
The Cost of Following Jesus
Lk. 9:57–62
18 When Jesus observed a large crowd gathering around Him and pressing in, He gave orders to His disciples to cross to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
19 A scribe—a teacher of the Jewish law—approached and said to Him with apparent enthusiasm, "Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go, no matter where Your journey takes You."
20 Jesus replied to him, testing his commitment, "Foxes have dens where they live and birds of the air have nests for shelter, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head and call His own—I live without earthly security or comfort."
21 Another of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father, fulfilling my family obligations."
22 But Jesus told him with urgency, "Follow Me now without delay, and let the spiritually dead bury their own physical dead."
The Calming of a Great Storm
Mk. 4:35–41; Lk. 8:22–25
23 When He got into the boat to cross the sea, His disciples followed Him and embarked with Him.
24 Suddenly, without warning, a violent storm erupted on the lake, with waves so high and powerful they were swamping the boat and threatening to sink it, yet Jesus remained peacefully sleeping.
25 The disciples came to Him in panic and woke Him up, crying out in fear, "Lord, save us! We are perishing and about to drown!"
26 He said to them, "Why are you so afraid and filled with terror, you men of little faith and weak trust?" Then He stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea with His authoritative word, and immediately there was a perfect calm.
27 The men were utterly amazed and filled with wonder, saying to one another, "What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him and submit to His command?"
The Healing of the Gadarene Demon-Possessed Men
Mk. 5:1–20; Lk. 8:26–39
28 When He arrived on the other side of the sea in the region of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed came out from the tombs to meet Him. They were so extremely dangerous that no one could safely pass through that area.
29 They cried out with loud voices, saying, "What do You want with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torture us and inflict punishment before the appointed time of final judgment?"
30 Some distance away from them, there was a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside.
31 The demons begged and pleaded with Him, saying, "If You are going to cast us out of these men, send us into that herd of pigs instead."
32 He said to them with authority, "Go." So the demons came out of the men and went into the pigs, and suddenly the entire herd—about two thousand animals—rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned in the water.
33 The men who had been tending and watching the pigs fled in terror and went into the nearby town, reporting everything that had happened—including all the details about what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
34 Then the whole town came out to meet Jesus and see for themselves, and when they saw Him and understood what had occurred, they begged Him insistently to leave their region, valuing their economic interests over spiritual deliverance.
