MAT 28

28
The Resurrection
Mk. 16:1-8; Lk. 24:1-12; Jn. 20:1-10
1 After the Sabbath had ended, at the first light of dawn on the first day of the week—Sunday morning—Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to visit and observe the tomb where Jesus had been laid.
2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven with power and glory. He came to the tomb, rolled away the large stone from the entrance, and sat down on it in triumph.
3 The angel's appearance was like brilliant lightning, dazzling and glorious, and his clothing was white as snow, radiating purity and holiness.
4 The guards posted at the tomb were filled with dread at the sight of the angel. They became like dead men, falling to the ground from fear.
5 But the angel spoke to the women, saying, "Do not be afraid. I know that you are seeking Jesus, the One who was crucified.
6 He is not here in this tomb, for He has been raised from the dead, just as He told you He would be. Come here and see the place where He was lying. The tomb is empty."
7 The angel commanded them, "Now go quickly and tell His disciples this message: 'He has been raised from the dead, and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him, just as He promised.' Listen carefully—I have given you this message to deliver."
8 The women quickly departed from the tomb with mixed emotions—fear at what they had witnessed and great joy at the news of the resurrection. They ran to bring the report to His disciples.
9 As they were going to find the disciples, Jesus Himself suddenly met them on the path, saying, "Greetings!" The women immediately approached Him, took hold of His feet in worship and reverence, and worshipped Him as their risen Lord.
10 Then Jesus said to them reassuringly, "Do not be afraid. Go and take this message to My brothers—tell them to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me as I promised."
The Report of the Guard
11 While the women were going to tell the disciples, some of the soldiers from the guard detail went into the city. They reported to the chief priests everything that had taken place at the tomb.
12 After the chief priests had assembled with the elders and consulted together about how to respond to this crisis, they gave a substantial sum of money to the soldiers as a bribe.
13 They instructed the soldiers, "You must say this: 'His disciples came during the night while we were sleeping and stole His body away.'
14 And if this report reaches the governor's ears and he questions you about sleeping on duty, we will satisfy him with our explanation and keep you out of trouble. You will not be punished."
15 So the soldiers took the money and did exactly as they had been instructed. This fabricated story has been spread among the Jewish people and circulated to this very day.
The Great Commission
Mk. 16:14-18; Lk 24.36-49; Jn. 20:19-23; Acts 1:6-8
16 The eleven remaining disciples journeyed to Galilee as Jesus had directed them, going to the specific mountain that Jesus had designated for their meeting.
17 When they saw the risen Jesus, they worshiped Him in awe and wonder. However, some among them expressed doubt and scepticism, struggling to believe what they were seeing.
18 Jesus came near and spoke to them with words of ultimate authority, saying, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been granted to Me by the Father—I possess absolute sovereignty over all creation.
19 Therefore, based on My authority, go and make disciples of all the nations of the world, not just Israel. Baptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit—bringing them into relationship with the Triune God.
20 Teach these new disciples to observe and obey everything I have commanded you throughout My ministry. And behold, I am with you always, every single day, until the end of the age when I return and history is consummated."
