The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
Lk. 3:23-38
The record of the genealogy and ancestral line of Jesus Christ—the son of David (fulfilling the royal messianic promises) and the son of Abraham (fulfilling the covenant promises to the patriarch).
Abraham became the father of Isaac through God's miraculous promise, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers—the twelve patriarchs of Israel.
And Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar—including this unusual union to show God's grace even in irregular circumstances—and Perez became the father of Hezron, and Hezron became the father of Ram.
And Ram became the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon became the father of Salmon.
And Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab—the Gentile woman and former prostitute, demonstrating God's inclusive grace—and Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth—another Gentile woman, showing God's plan includes all nations—and Obed became the father of Jesse.
And Jesse became the father of David the king—the great king of Israel through whose line the Christ would come. And David became the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah—deliberately referencing Bathsheba through her former husband to acknowledge David's grievous sin, yet showing God's redemptive grace.
And Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam became the father of Abijah, and Abijah became the father of Asaph.
And Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram, and Joram became the father of Uzziah.
And Uzziah became the father of Jotham, and Jotham became the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah.
And Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh became the father of Amon, and Amon became the father of Josiah.
And Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the tragic deportation and exile to Babylon—marking a dark period in Israel's history.
Then after the deportation to Babylon and during the exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel—the governor who led the return from exile.
And Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud, and Abiud became the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim became the father of Azor.
And Azor became the father of Zadok, and Zadok became the father of Achim, and Achim became the father of Eliud.
And Eliud became the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar became the father of Matthan, and Matthan became the father of Jacob.
And Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary—noting that Joseph was the legal father though not the biological father—from whom Jesus was born, the One who is called Christ——the Messiah and Anointed One.
Therefore, all the generations from Abraham to David totalled fourteen generations, representing the period of promise; and from David to the deportation to Babylon were fourteen generations, representing the period of the kingdom; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ were fourteen generations, representing the period of exile and anticipation—God's sovereign plan unfolding through history in ordered progression.
The Birth of Jesus Christ
Lk. 2:1-7
Now the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, happened in this miraculous way: When His mother Mary had been pledged in a legally binding betrothal to Joseph—a commitment as binding as marriage itself—before they came together in physical union as husband and wife, she was found to be with child, pregnant through the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, not through any human father.
So Joseph, her husband and betrothed—being a righteous and just man who sought to obey God's Law, and not willing to expose her publicly to shame and potential stoning for suspected adultery—intended to divorce her and send her away secretly and quietly, to protect her from public disgrace.
But whilst he was reflecting on and pondering these troubling matters, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream with divine revelation, saying, "Joseph, son of David—addressed as a descendant of the royal line—do not be afraid or hesitant to take Mary as your wife in full marriage, for the child that has been conceived in her womb is from the Holy Spirit, not from any human father.
And she will bear a Son, and you shall call His name 'Jesus'—which means 'Yahweh saves'—for He will save His people from their sins, accomplishing the work of redemption and delivering them from the guilt, penalty, and power of sin."
Now, all this occurred and came to pass in order to fulfil what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, saying,
"Behold, the virgin—the young woman who has never known a man—will be with Child and will bear a Son, and they will call His name Emmanuel," which is translated and means, "God with us"*—signifying that God Himself has come to dwell amongst His people in human flesh.
And when Joseph woke up from his sleep, he did exactly as the angel of the Lord commanded him; and he took Mary as his wife in full marriage,
And did not engage in sexual relations with her, preserving her virginity until after she had borne a Son—her firstborn. And he called His name Jesus, in obedience to the angel's instruction.
