And she will bear a Son, and you shall call His name 'Jesus'—which means 'Yahweh saves'—for He will save His people from their sins, accomplishing the work of redemption and delivering them from the guilt, penalty, and power of sin."

"Behold, the virgin—the young woman who has never known a man—will be with Child and will bear a Son, and they will call His name Emmanuel," which is translated and means, "God with us"*—signifying that God Himself has come to dwell amongst His people in human flesh.

But whilst he was reflecting on and pondering these troubling matters, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream with divine revelation, saying, "Joseph, son of David—addressed as a descendant of the royal line—do not be afraid or hesitant to take Mary as your wife in full marriage, for the child that has been conceived in her womb is from the Holy Spirit, not from any human father.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, happened in this miraculous way: When His mother Mary had been pledged in a legally binding betrothal to Joseph—a commitment as binding as marriage itself—before they came together in physical union as husband and wife, she was found to be with child, pregnant through the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, not through any human father. So Joseph, her husband and betrothed—being a righteous and just man who sought to obey God's Law, and not willing to expose her publicly to shame and potential stoning for suspected adultery—intended to divorce her and send her away secretly and quietly, to protect her from public disgrace.
