Repent or Perish
1 At that very time some people arrived who brought Jesus news about certain Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices—killing them while they were worshiping.
2 Jesus responded to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this fate?
3 No, I tell you emphatically. But unless you repent and turn from your sins, you will all likewise perish.
4 Or those eighteen people on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think they were more guilty sinners than all the other people living in Jerusalem?
5 No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way."
The Parable of the Fig Tree
6 Then Jesus told this parable: "A certain man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He came looking for fruit on it but found none.
7 So he said to the vineyard worker, 'Look, for three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and have found none. Cut it down! Why should it continue using up the soil and depleting its nutrients?'
8 But the worker replied to him, 'Sir, leave it alone for one more year. Let me dig around it and put fertilizer on it.
9 If it bears fruit next year, excellent. But if not, then you can cut it down.'"
A Woman with a Spirit of Disability
10 Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath day.
11 A woman was there who had been afflicted by a spirit of disability for eighteen years. She was bent over and completely unable to straighten herself up.
12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your disability."
13 He laid His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began glorifying and praising God.
14 But the synagogue ruler was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. He said to the crowd, "There are six days in which work should be done. Come on those days and be healed, not on the Sabbath day."
15 But the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it away to give it water?
16 This woman is a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years. Should she not be released from this bondage on the Sabbath day?"
17 When Jesus said these things, all those who opposed Him were put to shame and humiliated. But the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven
Matt. 13:31-33; Mk. 4:30-32
18 Therefore Jesus said, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?
19 It is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches."
20 Again Jesus asked, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour until the entire batch of dough was leavened."
The Narrow Door
Matt. 7:13-14, 21-23
22 Jesus was travelling through towns and villages, teaching as He made His way towards Jerusalem.
23 Someone asked Him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?" He said to them,
24 "Strive and exert yourselves to the utmost to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter but will not be able.
25 Once the master of the house has gotten up and shut the door, you will stand outside knocking on the door, saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' But He will answer you, 'I do not know where you come from.'
26 Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.'
27 But He will reply, 'I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness and evildoing!'
28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown outside.
29 People will come from east and west, from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.
30 And take note: Some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last."
Jesus Laments Over Jerusalem
Matt. 23:37-39
31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Leave this place and go away, because Herod wants to kill You."
32 Jesus replied, "Go tell that fox, 'Listen: I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete My work.'
33 Nevertheless, I must keep going on My way today and tomorrow and the day following, because it is unthinkable that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
35 Look, your house is left to you desolate and abandoned. I tell you, you will not see Me again until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
