The Resurrection of Jesus
Matt. 28:1-10; Mk. 16:1-8; Lk. 24:1-12
1 Now on the first day of the week, Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark before dawn, and saw the stone had been removed from the tomb, rolled away.
2 So she ran with urgency and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, John, and said to them, "They have removed the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him. His body is gone!"
3 Then Peter and the other disciple went out, and they were going to the tomb to investigate.
4 The two were running together in haste, but the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and reached the tomb first.
5 When he had stooped down to look inside, he saw the linen wrappings lying there undisturbed, but he did not enter.
6 Then Simon Peter also came following him, and he entered the tomb boldly and saw the linen wrappings lying there,
7 and the face cloth that had been on His head. It was not lying with the linen wrappings, but folded up separately in one place, indicating an orderly departure.
8 So then, the other disciple who had arrived at the tomb first also entered, and he saw the evidence and believed that Jesus had risen.
9 (For they did not yet understand the Scripture that it was necessary for Him to rise from the dead, though it had been prophesied.)
10 Then the disciples went back again to their own homes, pondering these things.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
Mk. 16:9-11
11 But Mary stood outside the tomb, weeping in grief. So, as she was weeping, she stooped down to look into the tomb,
12 and she saw two angels in white garments sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have placed Him. I cannot find Him."
14 After she had said these things, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realise that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing that He was the gardener who tended the area, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will take Him away."
16 Jesus said to her personally, "Mary." Hearing His voice, having turned, she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me or hold on to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father in final ascension. But go to My brothers, My disciples, and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God'"
18 Mary Magdalene came and reported to the disciples with joy, "I have seen the Lord!"—and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
Matt. 28:16-20; Mk. 16:14-18; Lk. 24:36-49
19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors had been shut where the disciples were gathered on account of fear of the Jewish authorities, Jesus came supernaturally and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace to you. Do not be afraid."
20 Having said this, He showed His hands with the nail prints and His side with the spear wound to them as proof. The disciples then rejoiced greatly when they saw the Lord alive.
21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you and be at rest. As the Father has sent Me into the world, so also I send you into the world with the gospel."
22 Having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they have been forgiven by God. If you retain the sins of any, they have been retained."
Jesus and Thomas
24 Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, who was called Didymus meaning "Twin," was not with them when Jesus came that first evening.
25 So the other disciples began to say to him, "We have seen the Lord alive!" But he said to them with scepticism, "Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will certainly not believe."
26 After eight days had passed, His disciples were inside again, and Thomas with them this time. Although the doors were locked for security, Jesus came supernaturally and stood in their midst and said, "Peace to you."
27 Then He said to Thomas directly, "Put your finger here and see My hands with the wounds. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. And do not be unbelieving any longer, but believing and trusting."
28 Thomas replied and said to Him in worship, "My Lord and my God!"
29 Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me with your eyes, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen Me, yet have believed through testimony."
The Purpose of Writing the Book
30 Now Jesus also performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book or recorded here.
31 But these signs have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name and through Him.
