Jesus Washes the Feet of His Disciples
Now before the Feast of the Passover began, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end.
During supper, the devil had already planted in the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, the intention to betray Jesus.
Jesus knew that the Father had placed all things under His authority, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.
So He rose from the meal, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist.
Then He poured water into a basin and began washing the feet of His disciples, drying them with the towel He had wrapped around Himself.
When He came to Simon Peter, Peter said to Him: "Lord, are You actually going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered and said to him: "What I am doing, you do not understand right now, but afterwards you will understand."
Peter said to Him: "You will never wash my feet—not ever!" Jesus answered him: "If I do not wash you, you have no share or partnership with Me."
Simon Peter said to Him: "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!"
Jesus said to him: "The person who has bathed completely needs only to wash his feet; the rest of his body is entirely clean. And you disciples are clean—though not every one of you."
For He knew who was going to betray Him. This is why He said: "Not all of you are clean."
When He had finished washing their feet, He put His outer garments back on and returned to His place at the table. Then He said to them: "Do you understand what I have just done for you?
You call Me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you speak correctly, for that is exactly what I am.
Now if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example to follow, so that you should do just as I have done for you.
I tell you with absolute certainty and truth: A servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Now that you understand these things, you will be blessed if you actually practise them.
I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: 'The one who shares My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.'*
I am telling you this now, before it takes place, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I am who I claim to be.
I tell you with absolute certainty and truth: The person who welcomes anyone I send welcomes Me; and the person who welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me."
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
Matt. 26:20-25; Mk. 14:17-21; Lk. 22:21-23
After saying these things, Jesus became troubled in His spirit. He testified solemnly and said: "I tell you with absolute certainty and truth: One of you is going to betray Me."
The disciples began looking at one another, completely uncertain about which one of them He meant.
One of His disciples—the one Jesus loved—was reclining close beside Jesus at the table.
So Simon Peter motioned to him and said: "Ask Him which one He is talking about."
Leaning back against Jesus' chest, he asked Him: "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus answered: "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it." Then He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
As soon as Judas received the bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus then said to him: "What you are about to do, do quickly."
None of those reclining at the table understood why Jesus said this to him.
Since Judas was in charge of the money bag, some thought Jesus was telling him to purchase what they needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor.
As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.
The New Commandment
After he had gone out, Jesus said: "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify the Son in Himself, and He will glorify Him immediately.
Little children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will search for Me, and just as I told the Jewish leaders, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
I am giving you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love one another.
By this everyone will recognise that you are My disciples—if you demonstrate love for one another."
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
Matt. 26:31-35; Mk. 14:27-31; Lk. 22:31-34
Simon Peter asked Him: "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered him: "Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow Me later."
Peter said to Him: "Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for Your sake."
Jesus responded: "Will you really lay down your life for Me? I tell you with absolute certainty and truth: Before the rooster crows to announce the dawn, you will have denied knowing Me three times!
