Christian Living among Outsiders
1Remind them to submit # 3:1 Rm 13:1–7; 1Pt 2:13–14 to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2to slander no one, to avoid fighting, and to be kind, always showing gentleness # 3:2 Jms 3:13 to all people. 3For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved by various passions # 3:3 2Pt 1:4; 2:10 and pleasures, # 3:3 Jms 4:1 living in malice and envy, hateful, detesting one another.
4But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, # 3:4 1Tm 1:1; 2:3; Ti 1:3; 2:10; Jd 25 5he saved us # 3:5 Rm 11:14; 2Tm 1:9 — not by works of righteousness that we had done, # 3:5 Eph 2:9 but according to his mercy # 3:5 Eph 2:4; 1Pt 1:3 — through the washing of regeneration # 3:5 Jn 3:5; Eph 5:26; 1Pt 3:21 and renewal by the Holy Spirit. # 3:5 Rm 12:2 6He poured out his Spirit on us abundantly # 3:6 Jl 2:28; Ac 2:33; 10:45; Rm 5:5 through Jesus Christ our Savior 7so that, having been justified by his grace, # 3:7 Ac 13:43; 15:11; 1Co 8:1; Gl 1:6; 1Pt 4:10 we may become heirs with the hope of eternal life. # 3:7 Ti 1:2 8This saying is trustworthy. # 3:8 1Tm 1:15; 3:1; 4:9; 2Tm 2:11 I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God might be careful to devote themselves to good works. These are good and profitable for everyone. 9But avoid foolish debates, # 3:9 1Tm 6:4 genealogies, # 3:9 1Tm 1:4 quarrels, # 3:9 Rm 1:29; 13:13; 1Co 1:11; 3:3; 2Co 12:20; Gl 5:20; Php 1:15; 1Tm 6:4 and disputes about the law, because they are unprofitable and worthless. 10Reject a divisive # 3:10 1Tm 1:9 person after a first and second warning. # 3:10 Mt 18:15; 2Th 3:15 11For you know that such a person has gone astray and is sinning; he is self-condemned.
Final Instructions and Closing
12When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, # 3:12 Ac 20:4; Eph 6:21; Col 4:7; 2Tm 4:12 make every effort to come to me # 3:12 Lk 14:26; 2Tm 4:9 in Nicopolis, because I have decided to spend the winter there. 13Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos # 3:13 Ac 18:24; 19:1; 1Co 1:12; 3:4–6,22; 4:6; 16:12 on their journey, so that they will lack # 3:13 Jms 2:15 nothing.
14Let our people learn to devote themselves to good works for pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful. # 3:14 Mt 13:22; Mk 4:19; 1Co 14:14; Gl 5:22; Eph 5:11; 2Pt 1:8; Jd 12 15All those who are with me send you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with all of you. # 3:15 Col 4:18; 2Th 3:16

1Remind them to be V'NISHMA (obedient, and we will obey!)#3:1 Ex 24:7 to sarim (rulers), to shiltonim (authorities), to be submissive, to be obedient, ready for every ma'aseh tov. 2Speak lashon hora of no one, be not ohev riv (quarrelsome). Be eidel (gentle), displaying anavah (meekness) to kol Bnei Adam. 3For all of us were once without da'as, sorrarim (disobedient), being led astray, avadim (slaves) of ta'avot and to various ta'anugot (pleasures) of the Olam Hazeh, spending our lives in eyvah#3:3 Gn 3:15 (enmity) and kina (jealousy), hated, and hating one another. 4But when the Chen v'Chesed and the ahavas Hashem Moshieinu appeared to Bnei Adam, 5Not by tzidkateynu (our righteousness) in ma'asim tovim which is to our zchus (merit), but according to His rachamim, He granted us Yeshu'at Eloheynu through the mikveh mayim ruchani of rebirth and hitchadshut of the Ruach Hakodesh,#3:5 Yn 3:3 6Which Hashem poured out on us richly through Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua Moshieinu, 7That, having been made YITZDAK IM HASHEM#3:7 Job 25:4 by the Chen v'Chesed of Hashem, we might become yoreshim (heirs) in the tikvah HaChayyei Olam. 8This dvar Emes is trustworthy. And I counsel you to strongly affirm the divrei torah I am handing on to you, that those who have become ma'aminim in Hashem may be shomer for ma'asim tovim. These things to Bnei Adam are good, tov me'od. 9But pilpul minutiae controversies and toldot and quarrels and fights about the Torah, avoid, for they are unprofitable hevel. 10An ish hacholek (a man of division, a divisive man) after one or two warnings, avoid, 11Having da'as that such a man is perverted and sinful, bringing harsha'ah (condemnation) upon himself.
12When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, try to come to me at Nicopolis, for there I have decided to spend the choref (winter). 13Do your utmost to speed Zenas, the Ben Torah (scholar), and Apollos on their way, that nothing for them may be lacking. 14Let anshei adateynu (the men of our community) learn to be concerned about ma'asim tovim so as to supply urgent needs, that they may not be lo poreh (unfruitful).
15Drishat Shalom from all the ones with me. Drishat Shalom to those who have ahavah for us in the emunah.#3:15 of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach
Chen v'Chesed Hashem to all of you.
