Greeting
1Paul, # 1 Ac 13:9 a prisoner # 1 2Tm 1:8; Heb 13:3 of Christ Jesus, # 1 Rm 1:1 and Timothy # 1 Ac 16:1; 1Tm 1:2 our brother:
To Philemon our dear friend and coworker, 2to Apphia our sister, # 2 Other mss read our beloved to Archippus # 2 Col 4:17 our fellow soldier, # 2 Php 2:25 and to the church that meets in your home. # 2 Ac 12:12; Rm 16:5
3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Love and Faith
4I always thank my God when I mention you in my prayers, 5because I hear of your love # 5 Dt 6:5; Mt 22:37; Gl 5:6,22; Eph 6:23; 1Th 1:3; 3:6; 5:8; 1Tm 1:14; 1Jn 4:20 for all the saints and the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus. 6I pray that your participation in the faith may become effective # 6 Gl 5:6 through knowing every good thing # 6 Gn 1:31; 18:18; 3Jn 11 that is in us # 6 Other mss read in you for the glory of Christ. 7For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed # 7 Lk 12:19; 2Tm 1:16 through you, brother.
An Appeal for Onesimus
8For this reason, although I have great boldness in Christ to command you to do what is right, 9I appeal to you, instead, on the basis of love. I, Paul, as an elderly man # 9 Or an ambassador and now also as a prisoner # 9 2Tm 1:8; Heb 13:3 of Christ Jesus, 10appeal to you for my son, # 10 1Th 2:11 Onesimus. # 10 In Gk, Onesimus means “useful”,# 10 Col 4:9 I became his father # 10 1Co 4:15 while I was in chains. 11Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me. 12I am sending him back to you — I am sending my very own heart. # 12 Other mss read him back. Receive him, my own heart.,# 12 Lit you — that is, my own heart 13I wanted to keep him with me, so that in my imprisonment for the gospel he might serve me in your place. 14But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent, so that your good deed might not be out of obligation, but of your own free will. 15For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a brief time, so that you might get him back permanently, 16no longer as a slave, but more than a slave — as a dearly loved brother. He is especially so to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh # 16 Php 3:3 and in the Lord. # 16 1Co 16:19; Rv 11:8
17So if you consider me a partner, welcome # 17 Rm 14:1 him as you would me. 18And if he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. # 18 Rm 5:13 19I, Paul, write this with my own hand: # 19 1Co 16:21 I will repay it — not to mention to you that you owe me even your very self. 20Yes, brother, may I benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. 21Since I am confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22Meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, since I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
Final Greetings
23Epaphras, # 23 Col 1:7; 4:12 my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings, and so do 24Mark, # 24 Ac 12:12,25; 15:37,39; Col 4:10; 2Tm 4:11; 1Pt 5:13 Aristarchus, # 24 Ac 19:29 Demas, and Luke, # 24 Col 4:14; 2Tm 4:10–11 my coworkers.
25The grace of the Lord # 25 Other mss read our Lord,# 25 2Th 3:18; Rv 11:8 Jesus Christ be with your spirit. # 25 Ps 51:12

Philemon 1
1
1Sha'ul, a prisoner of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua and Timotiyos acheinu (our brother).
To Philemon ha'ahuv (the beloved) and our fellow po'el (worker), 2And to Apphia achoteinu (our sister) and to Archippus our chaver leneshek (comrade arms) and to the Kehillah in your bais.
3Chen v'Chesed Hashem and Shalom Hashem to you from Elohim Avinu and from Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu Yehoshua.
4I always offer a bracha to my G-d when I mention you in my tefillos (prayers), 5Because I hear of your ahavah (agape) and emunah, which you have for Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu Yehoshua and for all the Kedoshim. 6[I pray] that your emunah (faith) being shared in Moshiachʼs kiruv rechokim (bringing near the far away ones) may become effective in the da'as of every mitzvah we may do for Moshiach. 7For I had simcha gedolah (much joy) and chizzuk (encouragement) because of your ahavah, for the levavot of the Kedoshim have been refreshed through you, Ach b'Moshiach.
8Therefore, though I have much boldness in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach that I could in fact order you to do your chovah musarit (moral duty) of avodas hakodesh (holy service), 9Yet I would rather make an appeal on the mekor (basis) of ahavah (agape) — I, [Rav] Sha'ul, the Zaken (Elder) but also a prisoner of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua. 10I appeal to you concerning beni, having “fathered” him (to a new birth) while in bais hasohar (prison) — that is, Onesimus,#1:10 the slave boy Onesimusʼ name means “Useful” 11The one once “Useless” to you, but, now, both to you and to me “Useful” (Onesimus). 12I am sending him who is my very lev (heart) back to you. 13I was wanting to detain him with me, in order that he might function as a keli kodesh (minister), ministering to me in your place, as your murshe (proxy), while Iʼm detained in the imprisonment of the Besuras HaGeulah. 14But I wanted to do nothing without your haskamah (consent, approval), in order that the mitzvah you do might not be meshabed (caused to be obligated) or forced, but voluntary. 15Eppis (for some reason) perhaps he was separated from you for a while in order that you might have him back for Yamim HaOlam, 16No longer as a bond servant, but, more than a bond servant, an ach ahuv (a beloved brother),#1:16 in Moshiach especially to me, and how much more to you, both as a man and in Adoneinu.
17So if you consider me partnered to you as a chaver [in our common orthodox Jewish emunah], receive him as you would me. 18But if in anything he wronged you or owes you, charge this to my cheshbon (account, bill). 19I, [Rav] Sha'ul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay. This is not to meorer (point out) the fact that on your cheshbon you owe me your very neshamah. 20Yes, Ach b'Moshiach, I would have some “usefulness” from you in Adoneinu. Refresh my lev in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
21Confident of you as one who is shomer mitzvot, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even above what I say. 22Also, this too, prepare a heimishe mekom linah (guest room, lodging place) for me, for I have the tikvah (hope) that through your tefillos I will be restored to you.
23Drishat Shalom to you from Epaphras, my co-prisoner in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua. 24Drishat Shalom, also, from Markos, Aristarchus, Demas, and Lukas, my fellow po'alim (workers).
25The Chen v'Chesed Hashem of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua be with your neshamah.
