Sound Teaching and Christian Living
1But you are to proclaim things consistent with sound teaching. # 2:1 Ti 1:9 2Older men # 2:2 1Tm 5:1 are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, # 2:2 1Co 13:1; 1Jn 4:16 and endurance. 3In the same way, older women # 2:3 1Tm 5:2 are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good, 4so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, 5to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission # 2:5 Lk 10:17; Eph 5:22 to their husbands, so that God’s word # 2:5 Lk 8:21; 2Tm 2:15; Heb 4:12 will not be slandered.
6In the same way, encourage the young men # 2:6 1Tm 5:1; 1Pt 5:5; 1Jn 2:13–14 to be self-controlled 7in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity # 2:7 Other mss add and incorruptibility in your teaching. 8Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, # 2:8 1Tm 2:2 so that any opponent will be ashamed, because he doesn’t have anything bad to say about us.
9Slaves are to submit to their masters # 2:9 Eph 6:5–9; Col 3:22; 1Tm 6:1; 1Pt 2:18; Jd 4 in everything, and to be well-pleasing, # 2:9 Heb 13:21 not talking back 10or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior # 2:10 1Tm 1:1; 2:3; Ti 1:3; 3:4; Jd 25 in everything.
11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation # 2:11 Or appeared with saving power for all people, # 2:11 Ac 1:8; Rm 10:14; 2Co 5:18–21; 1Tm 2:4; 4:10; 2Pt 3:9 12instructing us to deny godlessness # 2:12 Jd 18 and worldly lusts # 2:12 2Tm 4:10; 2Pt 1:4; 2:10 and to live in a sensible, righteous, # 2:12 Lk 23:41; 1Co 15:34; 1Th 2:10; 1Pt 2:24 and godly # 2:12 2Tm 3:12 way in the present age, 13while we wait for the blessed hope, # 2:13 Ac 23:6; 1Th 1:3 the appearing of the glory # 2:13 Lk 9:32; Jn 17:1,24; 2Co 3:18; 2Pt 3:18 of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14He gave himself for us # 2:14 Mt 20:28; Mk 10:45; Rm 8:32; Gl 1:4; 2:20; Eph 5:2,25; 1Tm 2:6 to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, # 2:14 Ex 19:5; Lk 1:68 eager to do good works.
15Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard # 2:15 Or despise you.
