Ecclesiastes 3

A Time for Everything

1For everything there is a season,

a time for every activity under heaven.

2A time to be born and a time to die.

A time to plant and a time to harvest.

3A time to kill and a time to heal.

A time to tear down and a time to build up.

4A time to cry and a time to laugh.

A time to grieve and a time to dance.

5A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.

A time to embrace and a time to turn away.

6A time to search and a time to quit searching.

A time to keep and a time to throw away.

7A time to tear and a time to mend.

A time to be quiet and a time to speak.

8A time to love and a time to hate.

A time for war and a time for peace.

9What do people really get for all their hard work? 10I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. 11Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. 12So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. 13And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.

14And I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God’s purpose is that people should fear him. 15What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has happened before, because God makes the same things happen over and over again.

The Injustices of Life

16I also noticed that under the sun there is evil in the courtroom. Yes, even the courts of law are corrupt! 17I said to myself, “In due season God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds.”

18I also thought about the human condition—how God proves to people that they are like animals. 19For people and animals share the same fate—both breathe#3:19 Or both have the same spirit. and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless! 20Both go to the same place—they came from dust and they return to dust. 21For who can prove that the human spirit goes up and the spirit of animals goes down into the earth? 22So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life. And no one can bring us back to see what happens after we die.

매사에 때가 있다

1모든 일에는 다 때가 있다.

세상에서 일어나는 일마다

알맞은 때가 있다.

2태어날 때가 있고, 죽을 때가 있다.

심을 때가 있고, 뽑을 때가 있다.

3죽일 때가 있고, 살릴 때가 있다.

허물 때가 있고, 세울 때가 있다.

4울 때가 있고, 웃을 때가 있다.

통곡할 때가 있고,

기뻐 춤출 때가 있다.

5돌을 흩어버릴 때가 있고,

모아들일 때가 있다.

껴안을 때가 있고,

껴안는 것을 삼갈 때가 있다.

6찾아나설 때가 있고,

포기할 때가 있다.

간직할 때가 있고, 버릴 때가 있다.

7찢을 때가 있고, 꿰맬 때가 있다.

말하지 않을 때가 있고,

말할 때가 있다.

8사랑할 때가 있고, 미워할 때가 있다.

전쟁을 치를 때가 있고,

평화를 누릴 때가 있다.

9사람이 애쓴다고 해서, 이런 일에 무엇을 더 보탤 수 있겠는가? 10이제 보니, 이 모든 것은, 하나님이 사람에게 수고하라고 지우신 짐이다. 11하나님은 모든 것이 제때에 알맞게 일어나도록 만드셨다. 더욱이, 하나님은 사람들에게 과거와 미래를 생각하는 감각을 주셨다. 그러나 사람은, 하나님이 하신 일을 처음부터 끝까지 다 깨닫지는 못하게 하셨다. 12이제 나는 깨닫는다.

기쁘게 사는 것,

살면서 좋은 일을 하는 것,

사람에게

이보다 더 좋은 것이 무엇이랴!

13사람이 먹을 수 있고, 마실 수 있고, 하는 일에 만족을 누릴 수 있다면, 이것이야말로 하나님이 주신 은총이다. 14이제 나는 알았다. 하나님이 하시는 모든 일은 언제나 한결같다. 거기에다가는 보탤 수도 없고 뺄 수도 없다. 하나님이 이렇게 하시니 사람은 그를 두려워할 수밖에 없다.

15지금 있는 것 이미 있던 것이고,

앞으로 있을 것도 이미 있는 것이다.

하나님은 #또는 ‘과거를 다시 불러 오신다’ 또는 ‘지나간 것을 다시 찾으신다’하신 일을 되풀이하신다.

16나는 #히, ‘해 아래’세상에서

또 다른 것을 보았다.

재판하는 곳에 악이 있고,

공의가 있어야 할 곳에 악이 있다.

17나는 마음 속으로 생각하였다.

“의인도 악인도

하나님이 심판하실 것이다.

모든 일에는 때가 있고,

모든 행위는

심판받을 때가 있기 때문이다.”

18나는 또 마음 속으로 생각하였다. “하나님은, 사람이 짐승과 마찬가지라는 것을 깨닫게 하시려고 사람을 시험하신다. 19사람에게 닥치는 운명이나 짐승에게 닥치는 운명이 같다. 같은 운명이 둘 다를 기다리고 있다. 하나가 죽듯이 다른 하나도 죽는다. 둘 다 숨을 쉬지 않고는 못 사니, 사람이라고 해서 짐승보다 나을 것이 무엇이냐? 모든 것이 헛되다. 20둘 다 같은 곳으로 간다. 모두 흙에서 나와서, 흙으로 돌아간다. 21사람의 영은 위로 올라가고 짐승의 영은 아래 땅으로 내려간다고 하지만, 누가 그것을 알겠는가?” 22그리하여 나는, 사람에게는 자기가 하는 일에서 보람을 느끼는 것보다 더 좋은 것은 없다는 것을 알았다. 그것은 곧 그가 받은 몫이기 때문이다. 사람이 죽은 다음에, 그에게 일어날 일들을 누가 그를 데리고 다니며 보여 주겠는가?
