When all the people were being baptised, Jesus also was baptised. While He was praying after His baptism, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove. A voice came from heaven, declaring, "You are My Son, the Beloved One. In You I am well pleased."

John answered them all, saying, "I baptise you with water as a symbol of repentance, but One who is mightier and more powerful than I is coming. I am not worthy even to untie the strap of His sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Produce fruit that is appropriate to and consistent with repentance. Do not even begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

Even now the axe is laid at the root of the trees, ready to cut. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire of judgment."

This fulfilled what is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "The voice of one calling out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight and ready. Every valley shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill shall be levelled. and the rough places shall become smooth paths. Then all humanity will see the salvation of God.'"*
