Die Here het vir Moses geantwoord: “Ook wat jy nou gevra het, sal Ek doen. Ek is jou goedgesind en Ek ken jou op jou naam.” Toe sê Moses: “Laat ek tog net u magtige verskyning sien!” Maar die Here sê: “Ek sal al my voortreflikheid voor jou laat verbykom en Ek sal die Naam ‘die Here’ vir jou uitroep, want Ek betoon genade aan wie Ek genade wil betoon en Ek ontferm My oor wie Ek My wil ontferm. Vir My kan jy nie sien nie, want geen mens kan My sien en bly lewe nie.” Die Here het verder gesê: “Maar hier by My is 'n plek waar jy op die rots kan staan. As Ek in my magtige verskyning verbykom, sal Ek jou eers in 'n rotsskeur sit en jou met my hande toemaak totdat Ek verby is. Dan sal Ek my hande wegvat sodat jy My van agter kan sien. Niemand mag my gesig sien nie.”
