Toe dit laat begin word, kom die dissipels na Hom en sê: “Die plek is verlate, en dit is reeds laat. Stuur die skare weg na die dorpies om vir hulleself kos te gaan koop. ” Maar Jesus het hulle geantwoord: “Hulle hoef nie weg te gaan nie; gee julle vir hulle iets te ete.” Hulle sê toe vir Hom: “Ons het hier net vyf brode en twee visse.” Hy sê egter: “Bring dit hier vir My.” Nadat Hy die skare aangesê het om op die gras te gaan sit, het Hy die vyf brode en twee visse geneem, na die hemel opgekyk en die seëngebed uitgespreek. Hy het dit toe gebreek, vir die dissipels gegee, en die dissipels weer vir die skare. Almal het geëet en het versadig geword. Hulle het van die stukke wat oorgebly het, twaalf mandjies vol opgetel. Afgesien van die vroue en kindertjies, was daar ongeveer vyfduisend mans wat geëet het.
