Later, toe dit aand word, het die dissipels bekommerd geraak. Hulle het vir Jesus kom sê: “Ons is hier op ’n verlate plek en dit word al donker. Stuur die mense terug na hulle huise toe sodat hulle kan gaan eet.” “Dit is nie nodig dat hulle nou al huis toe gaan nie. Gee julle sommer vir hulle iets om te eet,” het Jesus geantwoord. “Ons het net vyf brode en twee visse hier by ons,” het hulle verbaas gereageer. Jesus sê toe: “Bring dit hier.” Hy het die skare op die gras laat sit. Toe vat Hy die visse en die brood, kyk op na die hemel en sê vir God daarvoor dankie. Hy begin toe die brood in stukke breek en gee dit aan sy dissipels, wat dit weer aan die mense uitgedeel het. Jesus het aangehou om dit te doen totdat almal genoeg gekry het om te eet. Na die ete het die dissipels twaalf mandjies vol oorskietkos opgetel. Net die mans alleen was sowat 5 000. Dit is behalwe al die vroue en kinders wat ook daar was.
