Hieraan weet ons dat ons in Hom bly, en Hy in ons: Hy het ons aan sy Gees laat deel kry. En ons het dit aanskou, en ons getuig daarvan, dat die Vader die Seun as Verlosser van die wêreld gestuur het. Wie ook al bely dat Jesus die •Seun van God is, God bly in hom, en hy in God. Ons ken en vertrou die liefde wat God vir ons het. God is liefde. En wie in die liefde bly, bly in God, en God bly in hom. Hierin het die liefde onder ons tot vervulling gekom: Ons sal op die oordeelsdag vrymoedigheid hê, omdat ons in hierdie wêreld ook soos Jesus is. In die liefde is daar geen vrees nie. Inteendeel, volmaakte liefde dryf die vrees na buite; want vrees het te doen met straf, en wie vrees, het nie volmaak geword in die liefde nie. Ons het lief, omdat Hy ons eerste liefgehad het. As iemand sê, “Ek het God lief”, en sy broer haat, is hy 'n leuenaar. Want wie sy broer, wat hy sien, nie liefhet nie, kan nie God liefhê, wat hy nie sien nie. En dit is die gebod wat ons van Hom ontvang het: Wie God liefhet, moet ook sy broer liefhê.
