Nhưng Ngài phải đi ngang qua vùng Sa-ma-ri. Vậy, Ngài đến một thành của vùng Sa-ma-ri, gọi là Si-kha, gần cánh đồng mà Gia-cốp đã cho con mình là Giô-sép. Tại đó có cái giếng Gia-cốp. Vì đi đường mệt mỏi, nên Đức Chúa Jêsus ngồi lại bên giếng. Lúc ấy vào khoảng mười hai giờ trưa. Một phụ nữ Sa-ma-ri đến múc nước. Đức Chúa Jêsus nói với bà: “Cho Ta xin nước uống.” Lúc ấy, các môn đồ Ngài đã đi ra phố mua thức ăn. Người phụ nữ Sa-ma-ri nói: “Sao ông là một người Do Thái mà lại xin tôi, một phụ nữ Sa-ma-ri, cho uống nước?” (Vì người Do Thái vốn không giao tiếp với người Sa-ma-ri.)
