A God Who Weeps

“Jesus wept.” In many ways, that has been and continues to be a mysterious verse to me. Jesus wept. After all, being God, He knew He was going to raise Lazarus from the dead. He could have told Mary and Martha to snap out of it and stop weeping, but He didn’t. He could have convinced them He would raise Lazarus from the dead, but He didn’t. He could even have told some jokes to lighten the mood, but He didn’t. He wept. Jesus wept.

What a portrait of compassion—a God who weeps, a God who cares, a God who loves. Jesus, though He knew the outcome, wept. He was deeply moved by the pain and hurt the sisters were experiencing. We serve this amazing God of the universe, the Creator of the heavens and earth, who weeps for us when we hurt.

God is in sympathy with His loved ones.

I’m thankful for a Savior who conquers death. I’m thankful for a God who walks in our midst. I’m thankful for a God who weeps when we are weeping. I’m thankful because He is in sympathy with the suffering.

Prayer: Father, thank you for loving us enough to become one of us, to experience our pain and sorrow. Help us learn to love others as you do, and give us the compassion to weep with those who are hurting.
