Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of Hope

April 8

Introduction

A poor man named Lazarus begs for food, day after day, at the gate of a rich man; but when they die, their circumstances are reversed. Lazarus is carried to heaven, whereas the rich man suffers eternal torment in Hades. This parable is most likely a continuation of Jesus’s response to the Pharisees who loved money (see Luke 16:14, 15 from yesterday’s reading).

Today’s Scripture: Luke 16:25 (GNT)

[Abraham said:] “Remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain.”

Today’s Reading

Luke 16:19-31

Reflect

What does the rich man ask of Abraham? How does Abraham respond? Reread verse 31. The Pharisees would have been among the listeners in today’s reading; thus the warning in verse 31 would have been directed to them since they would not be convinced of Jesus’s message even after he was raised from the dead. If you encounter someone who refuses to heed Jesus’s message, what would you say?

Pray

Lord Jesus, open my eyes and my heart this day to those in need that I may extend compassion, kindness, and love in your precious name. Order my steps this day as I seek to serve you. Amen.

Prayer Concern

Those who are homeless

Tomorrow’s Reading

Luke 17:1-19: Jesus teaches about sin, forgiveness, faith, service, and thankfulness.
