Finding Jesus In Hanakkuh

DAY 7 OF 8

Day 7

Light of the World (Menorah)

Scripture: John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."

Teach: The iconic symbol and story of the menorah found in the events of Judah Maccabeus’ victorious revolt against Antiochus IV Epiphanes is a highlight of every Jewish family’s retelling of the Hanukkah story. This beautiful candelabrum is instantly recognizable around the world today. Whether it be a beautiful menorah made from gold with naked flame, or made from plastic with blue lights in a child’s bedroom window, everyone knows it.

Jesus obviously knew about it and its significance, and in chapter seven of the Gospel of John we read about Him attending the Feast of Tabernacles. This particular feast was where the Jews remembered God taking them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. We read about this on day two when we discussed the guidance of God with the Pillar of Fire. John 8:1 tells us that Jesus re-entered the city the next day and went to the temple. As He entered the city, He would have seen the four large menorahs that stood in the corners of Jerusalem. These massive menorahs, which would have been lit for the entirety of the feast, were now extinguished on this day. This moment had great significance because they had been living in spiritual darkness for centuries.  God had not spoken to them through His prophets during that time. Moreover, it is on this very day (maybe even at the very same time as the extinguishing of the menorahs) that Jesus announces Himself as the “Light of the World.” In doing so, He declares to everyone that if they follow Him, they will not walk in darkness.  Jesus is the greatest storyteller and communicator that has ever walked this earth and, once again, He used something culturally relevant to apply a biblical truth.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to illuminate any situation with the Light of Jesus. Whether it be in my home, at school, in public surroundings or in the workplace, let your light shine through.
