God’s will requires God

After cold water is poured on the flame of Moses’ burning bush when Pharaoh says, “No, I will not let your people go— instead I’ll make their situation even more intolerable,” Moses turns to the Lord. And over and over again, God reminds Moses that He is the Lord. He is God. “I am,” He repeats to Moses. And “I will,” He reiterates. God’s will requires God. Period. Discover God and you will discover His will. Discover God’s will and you’ll be able to walk through whatever hardship comes with Him. He is bigger and more powerful than you can imagine, and you and your struggles are a part of His story.

There’s a moment in C. S. Lewis’s book Prince Caspian that beautifully illustrates this. Lucy is reunited with the great lion Aslan, the rightful king of Narnia, whom she has come to love and trust. Aslan represents Christ in the story:

The great beast rolled over on his side so that Lucy fell half sitting and half lying between his front paws. He bent forward and touched her nose with his tongue. His warm breath came all around her and she gazed into his large, wise face.

“Welcome child,” he said.

“Aslan,” said Lucy, “you’re bigger!”

“That’s just because you are older little one,” he answered.

“Not because you’re really bigger?”

“I’m not. But each year you grow you will find me bigger.” ¹

Christian, each year you grow in Christ you will find Him bigger. Each time you endure hardship and keep looking to Him for guidance, you will find Him bigger. As our kids get older, we parents get smaller it seems. We’re superheroes when they’re three years old, and then they get to be teenagers and think they know it all. Our pink kitchens don’t seem big enough to hold their curiosities. But God, as we get to know Him over time, gets bigger, not smaller. When life gets tough (and it will), and following His will gets hard (and it will), imagine yourself resting between the giant paws of a great and loving Lion, where nothing can touch you that does not first come through Him. Then imagine His breath kissing you with the sweetness of grace, and rest there. You are held by the great Lion of the tribe of Judah, Jesus Christ—and He leads you forth into His will when you run to Him.
