The Legacy Journey

DAY 28 OF 31

Quiet Giving

Giving is the hallmark of those who win with money. That’s because we are made in God’s image, and He is a generous giver. He gave His Son (John 3:16), and He blesses His children richly. So He expects His people to give generously, as well.

That’s important since we live in a pretty selfish culture. It’s tempting to pile up stuff for ourselves, but God calls us to reflect His character and generosity. In fact, unbelievable generosity is the antidote for unbelievable selfishness.

But we also need to be careful about how we give. In Matthew 6:3–4, Jesus encouraged us to give quietly more times than not. He said giving should be private rather than a spectacle. That’s because when you give anonymously, people immediately say, “God did this.” He gets the glory, and that’s really the goal of giving in The Legacy Journey.

Admittedly, I struggle with this. I’m in the spotlight a lot, and I love to give. And there’s a part of me that would like to see my name on a building. But that’s dangerous thinking because it only focuses on me. So I really work hard to keep most things anonymous. That keeps my motives a little more pure and gives God the honor He deserves.

Give, but give with proper motives. Keep it quiet, then have fun watching God use the results.

Now, you will find exceptions. Sometimes, your giving can inspire someone else’s giving. You could find yourself in a position where your influence can make a big difference. But most of the time, you’re better off following the advice given by author Charles Dickens: “Do all the good you can and make as little fuss about it as possible.”

True generosity reflects God’s calling in our lives, but it takes planning and forethought to feel empowered to give to the fullest. The Legacy Journey will walk you through essential giving ratios and a solid plan to set you on your way to living a generous life.
