The Humble Learner
C.S. Lewis once wrote: "A proud man is always looking down on things and people, and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you."
The marketplace rewards expertise. It celebrates the confident expert, the decisive leader, the person with all the answers. But Scripture celebrates something different: the wise person who knows how much they do not know, and who keeps learning.
Proverbs 3:5–6 is not a warning against education or experience. God is not asking you to stop thinking. He is addressing something more subtle and more dangerous: the tendency to stop seeking. To reach a level of success or knowledge where we no longer feel the need to ask of God, or of other people, "What am I missing? What don't I see?"
The verse does not say: "Trust in your own understanding", even when that understanding is considerable. It says: in all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. This is a lifelong posture, not a beginner's prayer.
Loving God with your mind (Matthew 22:37) includes the ongoing discipline of learning. Reading broadly. Seeking mentors. Welcoming honest feedback. Staying curious about your industry, your team, your community, and the world. The leader who stops learning eventually stops leading well.
And the one who seeks God continually will find, as the psalmist discovered, that his word is a lamp to their feet and a light to their path (Psalm 119:105). Not a floodlight that illuminates everything at once. A lamp with enough light for the next step.
Reflection Questions
- How consistent are you in seeking God about your work, not just in crisis moments, but as a regular practice? And how actively do you seek wisdom from other people?
- Are there areas of your work where you have stopped growing because of comfort, success, or pride? What would it look like to become a learner again in those areas?
- When you face a major career or work decision, what is your first instinct: to rely on what has worked before, or to seek fresh wisdom from God and others?
Prayer
Father God, I am grateful for the knowledge and experience you have given me. But I know that I do not have the full picture of what you are doing, and pride can make me act as though I do. Please cultivate in me a genuine humility that keeps me curious, teachable, and dependent on you. Lead me to people from whom I can learn. Keep my mind sharp and open. And in every significant decision I face, may my first instinct be to seek your wisdom rather than rely on my own. Please be a lamp to my feet today.
Amen.
