In Our Limits, There Is Freedom
By Samantha Rodriguez
“There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless. So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun. When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth—people getting no sleep day or night—then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.”— Ecclesiastes 8:14–17 (NIV)
The system is rigged! Have you ever felt that way? The rich get richer. People with connections get jobs instead of people with qualifications. The righteous aren’t honored, and the wicked aren’t punished. In fact, the opposite seems to happen! As Solomon said earlier in this book, there really is nothing new under the sun. These unfortunate trends in the world may cause confusion, frustration, and doubt. Is justice possible? Does God care?
The truth is, on this side of heaven or “life under the sun,” justice may be perverted and evil may seem to be victorious. The world is broken because of sin. Yet there’s hope in God’s promise of redemption! When the tension feels unsettling, Solomon reflects on how the solution isn’t trying to solve it. There’s a limit to our understanding! We cannot control the future, predict outcomes, or fully understand God’s ways, but we can live in gratitude, fear of God, and trust. Wisdom isn’t trying to figure everything out, but accepting mystery and continuously exploring the depths of God’s love, creation, and relationship. Within our limits, there’s true freedom.
This doesn’t mean sitting back in ignorance or complacency, because God’s asked us, “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with [our] God” (Micah 6:8[1] NIV). He invites us to continually trust in Him because He’ll answer our calls, protect us, be with us in hardship, deliver us, and satisfy us with His lasting salvation (Psalm 91:14-16[2]). Solomon concludes that a life lived this way is the only worthwhile life to live. Receiving every gift, big or small, with gratitude and joy from the best gift giver!
When we recognize our limits and the role of God, we can truly enjoy the life and gifts He’s given us—from food to drink to friendship to work! Working hard to simply achieve or collect earthly goods is a waste. Working to be a good steward of God’s gifts, to enjoy them in authentic community for His glory, and to live in relationship with Him is what a worthwhile life is all about. Walk in the freedom this truth gives you today!
Pause: Where am I feeling frustrated by injustice or confusion, and how might God be inviting me to release my need to understand everything and trust Him instead?
Practice: List some things that seem unfair or out of your control. Pause and consciously hand them over to God in prayer. Then shift your focus to gratitude by naming a few simple gifts in your life today.
Pray: Father God, You’re trustworthy and just, even when it feels like the world around me isn’t. Remind me of how You’re working today. Encourage my heart to see Your faithfulness again. Thank You for being faithful when I’m faithless. Thank You for inviting me to walk in freedom and walk in the gifts You’ve given me. I don’t want to lose sight of that! I love you. Amen.
