Solomon – The Burden of Wisdom
Solomon, son of David, inherited a prosperous kingdom and was uniquely gifted with wisdom by God. His story teaches us about the duality of great gifts and the need for continual focus.
Solomon’s leadership began with an incredible request: when God offered him anything, he asked for an understanding heart to govern God's people (1 Kings 3:9). This humility and focus on service pleased God, who blessed him with unparalleled wisdom, wealth, and peace. As a leader, Solomon successfully brought Israel into its "golden age." He was the visionary who completed the monumental task his father, David, had planned: building the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem, making it the spiritual heart of the nation. His judgment was legendary (as seen in the story of the two mothers and the baby), and leaders from across the known world came to hear his counsel.
However, great wisdom did not exempt Solomon from human frailty. In his later years, his foreign wives turned his heart to worship other gods, leading him to compromise his focus and ultimately sowing the seeds for the kingdom's division after his death. His gift was vast, but his discipline waned.
The primary lesson from Solomon's leadership is that giftedness is not a substitute for sustained obedience and discipline.
As leaders, we often pray for wisdom, resources, or unique abilities to execute our calling. God often grants these requests. Yet, Solomon teaches us that even the most blessed and wisest among us must remain vigilant. The gifts God gives are meant to serve His purposes, but if we allow external influences—whether pride, comfort, or compromise—to shift our focus, even the greatest gifts can be misdirected.
Solomon's initial request for wisdom to govern was perfect. His eventual failure came when he prioritised personal pleasure and political expediency over the covenant obedience that defined his father's faith. True leadership requires not just receiving the gift, but diligently maintaining the relationship with the Giver.

About this Plan

Leadership is a very interesting calling. It allows you to see what God wants for his people and, in the same breath, pushes you to learn a lot about yourself. I have found that God will work on the leader as he or she submits to Him.
