Master Your Mind

DAY 1 OF 3

Discipline

2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines 'discipline' as 'control gained by enforcing obedience or order'. When discipline is imbibed, it is referred to as self-control.

From as early as I can remember, after I memorised 2 Timothy 1:7, which says, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind," I started wondering why the "sound mind" in the KJV was rendered "self-control", "self-discipline" or just "discipline" in most other translations. But actually, self-control is the fruit of a sound mind.

You will agree with me from experience that our state of mind largely determines our actions. That's why sometimes, when we are anxious or upset, we become impulsive and find ourselves making irrational decisions and even doing things we promised never to repeat.

A sound mind thinks clearly and is free of any addiction or obsession. It is in total control of its thoughts and words, and logically evaluates situations before taking action.

Jesus died and rose to give us the ability to be in absolute control of our decisions at all times. He didn’t stop there. After He ascended, He sent the Holy Spirit to enable us to practically overcome gossiping, alcoholism, doomscrolling, and every destructive habit we’re finding difficult to break free from.

So, with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, our bad habits can be changed, and we can live more fulfilling lives that please and mirror Christ daily. No one has to be a helpless slave to addictions or spontaneity. However, the Spirit won’t work until we permit him because God has given us free will, which He won't violate.

Action Step: Write down every habit you’re struggling to break free from and invite the Holy Spirit to help you overcome them by His ability and not your own strength.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit. I receive your help to overcome every bad habit I’m struggling with. I trust you to help me be in full control of my actions at all times. In Jesus' name. Amen.

About this Plan

Master Your Mind

Over the next three days, we will consider three attributes that are vital and key to our transformation as believers. They are attributes that, when in place, enable us to manifest God's character and be victorious in life amidst the chaos all around. By the end of this study, may you have received the strength to embrace his standards in your daily life in Jesus' name. Amen.
