DAY 2 OF 10

Stage 1

Shock & Numbness: When the world doesn’t feel real

There are moments in grief when everything feels distant, as if life is happening somewhere else and you are simply watching it unfold. Words lose their meaning. Emotions feel muted and overwhelming all at once. You may find yourself moving through the day on autopilot, doing what must be done while your heart struggles to catch up with what has happened.

Shock and numbness are not signs of denial or weakness. They are often God’s gentle mercy, allowing the heart time to absorb what the mind cannot yet fully understand. In this early stage of grief, it is common to feel disconnected from others, from yourself, and even from God.

Prayers may feel empty. Scripture may be hard to read. Tears may come suddenly, or not at all.

But even here, especially here, God is near.

The Bible assures us that God draws close to the brokenhearted, not once you have found your footing, but in the very moment your heart feels shattered. When you cannot feel His presence, you can trust His promise. He is beside you, steady and unchanging, holding you when you do not yet have the strength to stand.

Prayer

Lord, everything feels unreal right now. My heart is overwhelmed, and my mind struggles to make sense of what has happened. Some moments I feel numb, and other moments the pain feels too heavy to hold. I don’t even know how to pray, but I trust that You understand every unspoken thought and tear I cry.

Sit with me in this stillness. Hold me when I don’t have the strength to stand. Remind me that I do not have to understand this season to be carried through it. Even when I cannot feel Your presence, help me trust that You are near and that Your grace is holding me. Amen.

Reflection / Journaling

  • What emotions or lack of emotions are you experiencing right now?
  • Are there moments when life feels distant or unreal?
  • What would it look like to rest in God’s presence today, without trying to make sense of everything?
