The Gospel Changes Relationships
One of the things that I first noticed when accepting Jesus was how God wasn’t just changing how I related to Him but also how I related to the people in my life. Paul opens his letter by celebrating the faith and love of Philemon. Philemon was a follower of Jesus whose life was known for refreshing others. His faith wasn’t private; it was visible in the way he treated people.
Paul writes, “Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you… have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people” (Philemon 1:7 NIV).
The gospel does more than change what we believe; it also changes how we relate to others. Faith in Christ should produce love, generosity, and encouragement that others can feel.
Before Paul ever addresses the difficult situation involving Onesimus, he first highlights what God has already done in Philemon’s heart. This reminds us that when God works in our lives, it affects every relationship around us.
Healthy Christian relationships are not built on convenience, but on the transforming love of Christ.
When Jesus changes our hearts, He also reshapes the way we treat family, friends, coworkers, and even those who have hurt us.
Reflection
- Who has refreshed your faith recently?
- In what ways can your faith bring encouragement to others?
Respond to God’s Word
Ask the Lord to make your faith visible through love, kindness, and encouragement to the people around you today.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the people who refresh my faith. Help my life reflect the love of Jesus so that others are strengthened and encouraged through my words and actions. Amen.

About this Plan

The gospel doesn’t just change our relationship with God—it changes how we relate to others. In the short letter of Philemon, Paul addresses a difficult situation between Philemon and his runaway servant, Onesimus, revealing the transforming power of the gospel. This story shows how faith in Jesus reshapes identity, restores broken relationships, and calls believers to extend forgiveness and grace. Over the next three days, discover how the gospel can transform your heart and influence the way you treat others. Ask God to help you live out His grace in every relationship.
