What do you reach for when life feels like too much — and what does that tell you?
When stress peaks, most of us have a default. Food. Scrolling. Binge-watching. Noise. Not because any of those things are terrible in themselves, but because we've trained ourselves to relieve discomfort immediately rather than to sit with it long enough to hear what it's actually saying.
Fasting interrupts that pattern on purpose.
Jesus speaks about fasting not as a crisis discipline but as a natural rhythm of life with God. He doesn't say if you fast — He says when. The practice is assumed. And the point isn't the abstinence itself; it's the space that abstinence creates. When you remove the thing you habitually reach for, you discover what was beneath it all along. Hunger. Longing. Need.
And that's precisely where God meets us.
Deuteronomy 8:3 reminds us that we do not live by bread alone, but by every word from the mouth of God. Fasting is the practical decision to test that truth. To say: I believe there is a deeper nourishment than what I normally consume. Let me find it.
What do you reach for when life feels like too much — and what does that tell you? The answer to that question is not meant to produce shame. It's meant to produce honesty. Because God doesn't meet us in our performed spiritual health. He meets us in our honest hunger.
Fasting creates a holy pause. In the space you make — in the hunger you allow yourself to feel — trust forms. Dependence deepens. And you discover something remarkable: God is more than enough to fill what you thought only other things could satisfy.
Reflection: What habit or comfort do you tend to reach for during difficult moments, and how might fasting from that thing create space for God to meet you there?
Call to Action: Identify your most automatic comfort mechanism this week and intentionally pause before using it. In that pause, pray: 'God, meet me here.'
Prayer: Father, I confess I often fill my hunger with things that don't satisfy. Teach me to sit with the space. Meet me in the pause. Show me that You are more than enough. Amen.
