The Total Man

DAY 2 OF 4

Why did Peter refer to wives as weaker vessels? To answer this, we must first understand what the word "vessel" means. A vessel is a container that holds something valuable. For example, a bottle is a vessel, while the water it holds inside is the content.

As we discussed earlier, the human body is the form, the vessel, that carries the valuable spirit of man which God created in His image. The spirit is the valuable content, while the body is the vessel. So, when Scripture refers to wives as weaker vessels, it is speaking only of the physical body, and not the spirit, intellect, or worth of a woman. Physiologically, the average female body has less muscle mass and bone density than the average male body. This is a biological fact and not a spiritual limitation.

What Apostle Peter was emphasizing is responsibility, not inferiority. He was instructing husbands to treat their wives with care, honour, and understanding, recognizing the physical differences between them. Sadly, this scripture has often been misused to suggest that women are less intelligent or less capable than men. The Bible does not support this interpretation.

While a woman’s physical form, or vessel, may be weaker, her spiritual capacity and intellectual ability are in no way diminished. The Bible is filled with examples of women whom God used powerfully to accomplish His purposes. Women such as:

  1. Priscilla, an early church leader who partnered with Apostle Paul and helped disciple Apollos.
  2. Deborah, a judge and prophetess who led Israel to victory against the Canaanites.
  3. Esther, a queen who risked her life to secure the survival of the Jewish people.
  4. Mary, a young woman whose faith made her worthy to carry and give birth to our Lord Jesus Christ.

God has never limited His work to one gender. He looks for faith, obedience, and willingness, qualities found in both men and women alike.
