Make Disciples That Make Disciples

DAY 2 OF 16

Hearing God's Voice

Listening to God’s voice is meant to be the daily posture of every believer. When we intentionally practice listening to God’s voice, we position ourselves to respond to His promptings in real time—leading to a more fruitful impact. If we are not listening to His voice, we may miss opportunities or cause delayed obedience. The world is loud, but His voice cuts through the noise for those who are determined and willing to pause and listen.

Here’s a short exercise:

Think about how you would introduce yourself to someone.

Now, pause and ask the Lord to share who He thinks you are.

Think about how you would introduce yourself again.

1.) How was the second way of introducing yourself different from the first way?

2.) How did it feel to be introduced the first way vs the second way?

As you enter into times of prayer and listening, dedicate time to listening to what the Lord is saying—Not just about you and your individual situation, but also about other people and their situations.

As you read through these verses about hearing God’s voice, reflect on these key themes:

Model—Jesus modeled listening and obeying the Father’s voice (John 5:19).

Relationship—Hearing God’s voice is a sign we belong to Him (John 8:47).

Recognition—Intimacy helps us know His voice from all others (John 10:27).

Guidance—The Holy Spirit keeps speaking Jesus’ truth to us today (John 16:13–14).

Questions to consider:

  • When you pray, are you actively taking time to listen to God?
  • If not, what does your time in prayer typically look like?
  • What are some habits that you can practice to hear God’s voice whenever He speaks?
  • Do you have expectations that God will talk to you in a specific way?
  • Do you believe that God can speak to us in a way other than an audible voice?
