Spiritual Leadership
Many people enjoy leading, and having the desire to lead isn’t wrong. But it’s important to reflect on the concept of “leadership” you have in your head, and whether or not it aligns with the model Jesus gives us.
In the world, leadership is often about elevating yourself above others; doing whatever you can to gain control, recognition, and authority.
But in Jesus’ world, the pattern is reversed.
Jesus teaches that the greatest is the one who serves, the most honored is the one who kneels, and the real leader is the one who washes others’ feet.
It really is the world upside down, and that is exactly how His Kingdom works.
If you want to be a leader in this Kingdom, it begins with serving. Jesus Himself modeled it. He didn’t demand attention or position. He came to give His life and lift others up. Kingdom leadership is never about personal greatness; it is always about reflecting the heart of Jesus.
And to reflect Him, you must stay close to Him. Leadership in God’s Kingdom grows out of this relationship. To become like Jesus–to serve like Him–you must stay close to Him.
But leading like Jesus is not something anyone does alone. Jesus didn’t call a single disciple. He formed a group – a community that shared life together and learned from each other.
Kingdom leadership always happens in community. Leading alone is dangerous – for the leader and for those they lead. Everyone needs others for encouragement, accountability, and balance.
Spiritual leaders are people who stay so close to Jesus that others can sense it. Spiritual leaders are servants; people who wash feet, walk humbly, and know they can’t do it alone.
Those are the kinds of leaders we need. Is that the kind of leader you want to be?
Reflection Questions
- How is leadership in the world different from leadership in God’s Kingdom?
- Do you know someone who leads like Jesus? What stands out to you about them?
- What small step toward servant leadership could you take today?
Prayer
Lord, You are the perfect leader: powerful in service, humble in nearness, healing in Your presence. That’s how I want to be! Teach me to lead the way You lead, serving and guiding others in Your way. Amen.
