New Year Reset

DAY 5 OF 6

Introduction

In a new year, we often aspire to reset the rhythms of life. We want to recalibrate, or in some cases, newly create what we consider to be healthy practices. We think about our calendar, physical health, work-life balance, and relationships. But what if the most powerful RESET we could make is to reconsider the lens through which we view life? God’s Word paints a divine perspective for every facet of life. As we consider what, where, and how to RESET, we look to Scripture and find that God has a lot to say.

Today's Bible Reading

Matthew 4:4 – Even Jesus leaned on God’s Word

RESET: How I See Myself

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”— Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

When Jesus was in the wilderness, He wasn’t just tempted, He was exhausted. After forty days of fasting, His body was weak, and His emotions were likely worn thin. In that moment of vulnerability, Satan approached Him, not just with temptations but with manipulation.

Over and over, the enemy challenged Jesus with the words,“If you are the Son of God…” Itwas a direct attack on His identity and trust in the Father. But Jesus didn’t argue, defend Himself, or rely on His own strength. He responded with the Word of God. John Calvin captured this moment perfectly when he wrote,

“You advise me to contrive some remedy for obtaining relief in a different manner from what God permits. This would be to distrust God; and I have no reason to expect that he will support me in a different manner from what he has promised in his word.”

That’s exactly what Jesus modeled. His weapon of response in that moment was His Father’s promised Word; the same Word that“will not return void” (Isaiah 55:10-11). Jesus knew those words carried power, authority, and truth, so He spoke them with confidence.

Like Jesus, we are constantly tempted, sometimes in big ways, but often in small, ordinary moments when we’re hungry, tired, or disappointed. In those moments, we can easily react in ways that hurt others or damage the very things God has entrusted to us.

Today, take a moment to RESET. When the lies come, when temptation whispers, when weakness sets in, respond the way Jesus did. Speak God’s Word over your situation. His promises are still true. His Word still holds power. It will always accomplish what He intends.

Reflect

What is one area of your life where you’ve been trying to find relief or strength apart from God’s Word? What Scripture could you begin declaring over that situation today?

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that Your Word is living and powerful. When I am weary or tempted to depend on my own strength, help me lean on what You have already spoken. Teach me to respond like Jesus, with truth, not fear; with faith, not doubt. Let Your Word fill my heart, guide my thoughts, and guard my steps. In Jesus’ name, amen.
