A Disciple-Making Movement in Your Church

DAY 5 OF 5

The Execution Myth (Church Impact = Ministry Ownership)

Where does disciple-making happen?

For years, disciple-making only happened in a church building. If I wanted my lost neighbors to hear the gospel, my goal was to invite them to church to listen to the “hired gun” evangelist share it. One prominent megachurch pastor used to say, “You get them to church, and I’ll disciple them.”

Yes, disciple-making does happen at the church. It should. But it shouldn’t stop there. The early church was not built on mass evangelistic services but on making disciples individually. Jesus rarely spoke to the crowds but instead opted for intimate, personal conversations with people. He met with Nicodemus at night, approached a woman at a well, and ate in people’s homes whom the church people called “sinners.” In fact, someone said Luke’s Gospel can be summed up as Jesus going to a meal, eating a meal, or coming from a meal.

When believers are activated to take responsibility for their faith, they begin to see their workplaces, their playing places, their living spaces, all their places and spaces as a mission field.

The execution myth carries a false belief that says ministry is only executed within the programming of the church. While disciple-making is certainly taking place in Sunday school classes, small groups, kids’ services, and student gatherings, these aren’t the only places for it. Ministry doesn’t happen only in your programming; it happens in your people’s neighborhoods and offices, at coffee shops and around family dinner tables, on the golf courses in your community, and on the ball fields where your people’s children play.

Busting the execution myth requires you to change your playing field. But to do this, you have to stop seeing yourself, the church leader, as a ministry owner and start seeing yourself as a ministry activator. We all need to measure our impact not by what we’re involved in but by who we’re influencing.

About this Plan

A Disciple-Making Movement in Your Church

No pastor desires to stunt their congregation’s growth or exhaust their staff. But when we accept myths as truth, we’ve been walking around with beliefs that drive our behaviors, preventing us from accomplishing our mission. This five-day plan from Robby Gallaty and Vick Green highlights five myths that may be sabotaging your church’s growth. Once you’re aware of what’s holding you back, you’ll be poised to activate the disciple-making movement your church was made for.
